Considering replacing HD (40G) to smaller SSD to improve (make it faster) speed.
I use the machine mainly for internet, presently with fedora12 with XFCE manager.
I know SSDs are improving and price is coming down.
1. will I notice any performance improvement?
2. how much $? (need about 10G for my needs).
thanks,
gychang
T42, SSD for linux?
Re: T42, SSD for linux?
Solid state drives require the so called "Trim" feature to ensure maximum efficiency, but that is only available on Windows 7 in the "windows world". Linux may also recognize the SSD and adjust it as needed, but I am not a Linux user, so I cannot tell.gychang wrote:Considering replacing HD (40G) to smaller SSD to improve (make it faster) speed.

YES. Much faster, even without Trim! Expect around 30% to 60% greater speeds.
Very expensive. You will pay around $250.00 U.S. for a 80 gig drive.
I am a "speed nut" so I run solid state on my three T60 machines and really like the results! Bigger multimedia files are kept on a standard ultra bay drive.
