USB 3.0 PCMIA Card for X61S

#1 Post by Sleep Machine » Wed May 12, 2010 8:59 pm

I just purchased a Western Digital 2TB USB 3.0 External Drive. It comes with a PCIe adaptor for my desktop, but I also want a USB 3.0 adaptor for my X61S which does not have an express card slot, just the "old style" PC Card slot [PCMIA Standard 2.1]. Any ideas on a source for such an adaptor?

I've never seen a USB 3.0 adapter in PCMCIA format, only Expresscard. I'd guess it is because the PCMCIA bandwidth can't handle USB 3.0 speeds.

I tried esata pcmcia cards for my thinkpad x61t. It only gave like 10 MB/s, and often times wasn't even able to recognize the external sata drive. Even if it was working as suppose to, I don't think I would want to mess with plugging in so may stuff on a ultra portable laptop.

I don't know whether they make usb 3.0 pcmcia cards or not, but chances are slim and not worth the hassle. Why don't you just wait for a laptop upgrade when usb 3.0 comes standard?
