A20m fan won't run in Windows, runs at POST...

#1 Post by mikey pizano » Thu May 13, 2010 11:32 am

Hey guys, I got a A20m off a friend, and I think there is a problem with the fan controller. It is not coming on when using Windows, but spins up at POST. I was wondering when the fan should come on, or if someone could help me get TPFanControl to work on this model so I could have it set to manually run.

It has not over heated yet, but I have seen it get to around 70c. What is the thermal shutdown for a Pentium 3 700MHZ A20m?

My father in-law had a T20 (same CPU as your A20M) that ran Prime95 24/7 for a few years. NHC reported CPU temps of mid-high 80's depending on the weather. No hardware problems at all.
Current Thinkpads: 600E, 600X, 701C, A31 (Flexview), R51 (Flexview), R60, T42P (Flexview), TR50E, T60 (Flexview), X61s (Ultralight), Z61m (Ti) Non-Thinkpad: Toshiba 100ct

Why did he run it that long? Using it to heat the house?

Thanks, Ray suggested I try a diagnostic test.

 Nah, just trying to find some sort prime number. It wasn't on the torture test setting, but it still kept the CPU pegged at 100% utilization all the time.

Which BIOS revision has been installed on your A20m?
The latest version is 1.13 - IWET59WW

Maybe helpful:
1.11 - IWET57WW
* (New) Improved CPU thermal control.
Thinkpads: 390, 570, A20m 15", A20m 14", T22, T41, T41p and a lot more...

Sorry to bump my old thread but the bios is 1.05 and I do want to update it. Do you really need a working battery? Mine is totally 100% shot.

See here for how to update without a battery, but as long as the installer sees 100% charged it probably won't complain. It should work with an A20m.

Wanted to bump this up again even though its old. I did get TPFanControl working, and have yet to update bios, but I was wondering if anyone ever solved the problem? What is the actual cause of the fan issues?
