Windows 7+Lenovo T60+Intel ICH7 USB UHC slow speed...

#1 Post by frostfreek » Fri May 14, 2010 2:00 pm

Re-posting from T60 hardware forum, as suggested there...

My device manager shows all USB Root Hub devices as USB 1.1, except for a single root hub that has 8 ports.
As a result, the USB ports on the left and right of my laptop are not configured as USB 2.0, and run super slow. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the devices many times.

I have tried the WinXP chipset driver, the Lenovo ThinkVantage Toolbox, the Lenovo System Update, Windows Update, all to no avail... the devices are still listed as:

Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Universal Host Controller - 27C8
Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Universal Host Controller - 27C9
Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Universal Host Controller - 27CA
Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Universal Host Controller - 27CB

whereas the one USB2 hub is listed as
Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB2 Enhanced Host Controller - 27CC

Everything I have found so far indicates that these ports on the left and right are USB2. I am almost certain they were USB2 for XP. These are connected to 27CA.

Anyone else running Windows 7 on their T60? Are your ports configured as USB2?
You can check this in the device manager, by right-clicking all the hubs, and on the advanced tab, it will say 'full speed' for USB 1.1, and 'high speed' for USB2. Or, just check the Universal Host Controllers to see if they say "Enhanced" on them.

Any other suggestions would be great...

Thanks!

If at least one host controller is displayed as "enhanced", it means that USB 2.0 drivers are in place and working properly. Otherwise you would see yellow exclamation mark in device manager next to USB controllers... so I think your USB ports are working in 2.0 mode.... have you tested the transfer rate?
check also USB setting in BIOS and make sure to enable 2.0 mode...

Have you even tried plugging in a device and seeing if you get the dreaded 'your device can perform faster' bubble?

To clear up some of your confusion about the host controllers.
Each of the 'Universal Host Controllers' should have two ports under them, making 8 USB1.1 ports to match the 8 ports you see under the Enhanced host controller (USB2.0). This should match the Physical number of ports connected to the actual Intel controller chip (may not match what your laptop has externally due to using USB for some other on board devices and the expansion port). Depending on what speed the device is determined to be it is routed to either the universal host controller, or the enhanced host controller. I you want to see what controller your device is connect to; google 'usbview.zip' (I would recommend the FTDI link) its a free Microsoft tool that will let you see more information about the USB device connected to your computer.

So, just like Yacek said it looks like your ports are ok and there is no reason to worry.
