DVD-RAM "disconnects" in Windows

#1 Post by allans » Sat May 22, 2010 2:15 am

I have been experiencing an annoying problem with DVD-RAM UJ-862 on my T61. Once in a while --especially when tilting the computer -- I'm getting an error message about Windows not being able to eject the drive as it is in use. Occasionally, the drive just disconnects itself. The problem started under XP but persists after upgrading to Windows 7. However, the drive burns and reads DVDs without any problems besides the occasional error message described above.

I have bought a replacement drive and tried to find drive updates for my DVD-RAM but there's nothing available. Also, the BIOS update for T61 is pretty old (2007).

Any help or suggestions highly appreciated!

Thanks,
Allan

Thanks,

You sir, have most probably bought a second CD drive for no good reason. The problem would be around the electrical microswitch of the Ultrabay release button, on the right side of the CD drive, below. Tilting the computer triggers that button somehow, this in turn sends a signal to Windows to eject the drive.

This is not common. Most probably your computer was repaired and assembled incorrectly, or there is dirt inside, etc... The only way is to open and inspect the entire drive release mechanism. Use the Hardware Maintenance Manual.
