Xandros Open Circulation Edition (Free)
Xandros has released a free edition of their linux distro called Xandros Open Circulation Edition.
It is free to use and distrubute for non-commercial use.
Fire up some Bittorrent and get it here:
http://www.xandros.com/products/home/de ... intro.html
It comes with Opera installed but Mozilla is just a few clicks away.
Xandros is very easy to install and performs better on older hardware than current mandrake or fedora releases.
It also has very good hardware detection.

Just to let you know, I installed this on an old 570 with a 333 cpu and 192 meg ram last night.
All the hardware was detected fine and the computer runs smoothly.
The install takes about 30 minutes but would be faster with a quicker processor.
The install was very easy and requires very little knowledge of your hardware.
It seems simple and powerful but not full of eye candy, which keeps in line (to me) with thinkpad design.
I would recommend Xandros OCE if you want to do a hard drive install or Knoppix if you don't want to install to the hard drive.
Sorry if I seem to be "Beating the drum" for this product but I think it is the best distro for new windows converts and that is what people here seem to be asking for.

Xandros OCE
Hey! I would sho' like to join all you people in your praise of Xandros.
Problem is, I have never been able to get mine to install. I have a CD
that I got off the net. Its been so long ago now, that I have forgotten if
I got it free or had to pay for it. I think I had to pay 10 bucks for it.
Unless I got it mixed up with something else.
My machine is a TP600E...288 MB, 400 MHZ.

I had red hat 9 installed on a little 10G hard drive I got from an old fiery print server, problem was finding the drivers, so now it sits in the box This looks llike a cool OS how much space would it need, how do I get bit torrent (or do I need it) and which machine would be easier to find the drivers for T30 or T42?

Re: upgrade for Mandrake7.2
Not very current. Why mess with an old version like that? The newer versions are much better.1stallthewayaj wrote:Does anybody know how current a Mandrake 7.2 can get via upgrade???

I just installed Xandros 3.02 on a T42 and it practically fell on.
Ubuntu works rather well too.
If you can't download it let me know and maybe I can send you a disc.

Ubuntu will run fine on that. Need me to send you a disc? I have pressed ones of the latest ubuntu.Kyocera wrote:I went to the bit torrent site and while it is cheap I would only need for the one download. Is unubu free? How many Gigs does it need to run, I have a ten gigger I like to play with.

Getting Mandrake Off HDD FWIW
The only way I could get that [censored] Mandrake off my HDD was to put
a factory w98 in the CD Drive and let it clean the disk until just before it installs.....then pull it out and install the other stuff.... when I tried to fdisk
it off, it didnt work!!!
