What is the difference between a wireless modem and a router? I have a regular dsl modem from verizon, and just got another computer, which is a laptop. I was told that I needed a router, but someone else told me that I needed a wireless modem. I don't know what I need.

Regarding your question, the basic difference between a router and a modem is this: a modem allows you to connect to the interet and the router allows you to share that connection; a wireless router would allow you to share that connection wirelessly. A wireless modem is basically a modem and wireless router rolled into one. You connect to the internet with it and you can create a wireless network.

Given that you have a modem from your ISP I would go with just a wireless router. Connect your router to your modem, your desktop to the router, and set up a SECURE (WPA2, notbWEP) wireless network for your laptop.
