T410 with Gobi 2000GPS Option

#1 Post by abester1 » Thu May 27, 2010 10:25 pm

Hi Folks, I'm a bit frustrated with Lenovo Tech and Sales support. I have called two times and both resulted nowhere.
Ok, enough complaining.... I have a few basic questions: I recently purchased a T410 model 2516-CTO with the Gobi 2000 GPS option. When i selected the option on the lenovo website, i expected to have a sub-option to tell me which telco provider I prefer. The website did not list any providers to choose. So im a little paranoid that I will get the wrong one.

I did a bit of reading online and figured out that the actual gobi card supports both Verizon and/or AT&T (EVDO and GSM). What I want to know: Does it come in locked to a specific Provider (e.g. att vs verizon) or do I have the choice to activate either??

Secondly, If I opted for AT&T and plugged in an already activated SIM card into the PC directly, Will this active AT&T SIM card automatically work with the integrated SIM Reader ? or do I have to call ATT for a new SIM and/or activate a new contract? and if It works with ATT, can I change the SIM and activate a new contract with Verizon at the same time?? Can I swap them regularly in case of bad service areas?? How does this work ???

I'm 100% road warrior and having both options would save me a bit of headache (carrying additional 3g cards, etc)

HELP !!!

Thank you in advance...

Not locked.

You might have to configure it, might not. Call AT&T, make the plan and configure the module. Verizon needs the module information because they use CDMA and not the GSM standard. You probably can swap them back and forth.
