Addicted to laptops
Addicted to laptops
This is a half-tongue-in-cheek post. I cannot seem to stop buying and messing with laptops--usually cheap used ones on eBay. I need help. Suggestions are welcome. (Giving them away doesn't seem to help...I just buy more to replace the ones I give away.)
Currently I own these:
T42
X41T
X31 (two of 'em)
HP 8510W
HP NC8430
HP NC6400
HP TC4400
HP TC4200 (two of 'em)
HP TC1000
HP Omnibook 500
Dell 1720
MSI X400
Fujitsu P1120
Toshiba Tecra M7
Here's a typical episode: A couple of weeks ago I bought an X31 on eBay for $100--a good deal (if I needed it). But then, I figured I needed more ram, so I spent $30 on 1gb on eBay. Then I figured I needed a better battery, so I spend $100 on 3 batteries on eBay. Then I figured I needed external DVI, so I spent $40 on two Dock IIs and $30 on 2 PCI video cards. Then I wasted a few hours messing around, putting a larger drive in the X31, installing programs, messing with the docks, etc.
There are many worse things in the world, and I ain't starving to death, but probably there are much better things to spend my time and money on then a bunch of old laptops and accessories. Maybe Dr. Phil can help.

Re: Addicted to laptops
tans*........yo sick Man U sic ! lol LOL... well there are lots worse things to getting addicted to ,,,,
teckie things aint so bad ,,,
I have a few suggestions for your laptops but will keep you from getting BORED and RESTLKESS.
I also build older laptops (mostly donated or abandoned) by (super rich) users..... and DONATE 'em to kids in need. I volenteer at few Local High School(s) and Tutor "brainiac" kids who are mostly too poor and cannot affford any laptops/ipods etc......
Since I often travel - so I have two only countries that I am set for THREE HIGH SCHOOLS at this time - 1- USA and 2- Australia. These High schools are in my stndards in the poorest area's of country - yes there are lots of places but I chose one in WV and other two are in OUTBACK AUSTRALIA. Most of these kids in NSW - Australia are Aborginals (Native Australians) and WV school is in Kanawha County.
Since I dont have much time to (fiddle)and do minor fixes I do msot things on the 'fly',,,,,as THINKPADS are most reibale prodcut(s) that I have seen in my lifetime ,,,,,,,, I would be very greatfull if I cam sollicit your help in fixing / donate / helping.... with these worthy cause(s).
I am in process of setting up a LEGAL CHARITY at this time since now ,,, this process is getting a bit big for my ONE SELF..... and this is a fully FUNDED ACTIVITY by me ...( no i dont get any TAX benefits or any way gain from this process)
Just trying to do my 'bit' for this earth , world ,,,,,ALL HELP WOULD BE WELCOME ... so this msg is for everyone else also
Hope your addictions is manageable .... and not too painfull
Cheers

tanstaafl, let's just say you're not alone. Some forum members actually have ThinkPad collections that others might even call ThinkPad museums. There are far worse hobbies and addictions.

Re: Addicted to laptops
I collect mostly Thinkpads but also snag a few others (Compaq, Fujitsu, Toshiba, etc) that look interesting. Mostly I collect 486/Pentium 1 but I have up to P4M.
Quite a few are from ebay, but I have had decent luck getting machines at the local recycler as well ($10 for working and $5 for parts machines).
Yesterday I snagged a Fujitsu Lifebook 765Dx P166MMX with a working battery in mint condition (CDROM installed and the floppy drive to swap with).
I probably have 40 laptops by now, but not that much money invested, it is a cheap hobby.
You might have a problem if you buy almost new machines for $$$$ and watch them collect dust and lose value.

Me?
Addicted to new ThinkPads?
List in my signature are only my favorites, not the entire collection.
No way...
(I'm the original owner of all in my collection, is that sick or what?)
