600E, memtest86 hung (Unexpected Interrupt-Halting) *PIC*

#1 Post by dimedrol » Sun May 30, 2010 1:35 pm

Hi!
I have working ibm thinkpad 600E (no any modifications/upgrades).
I use Linux Debian on it (Squeeze).
I use it rarely. It is stable. I do not remember that it hung.
It is 128Mb RAM in it (32 soldered, 32 pc66, 64 pc100).
Recently I decided to buy 128Mb ram memory stick. But
at first decided to check the current memory with memtest86.
I found that memtest86 always hung on test number #2 (moving inversions, ones & zeros)
with a error message: "Unexpected Interrupt - Halting CPU0".
Image
It is at the beginning, about 10 seconds.
I tried removing all the memory, and test only the built-in 32MB, but with
the same results.
I tried to set a certain address ranges of memory to test only one of the installed ram sticks, but results was the same.
Another memory checking program (memtester) runs successfully. Memtester runs from Linux, and
it is not as powerful as memtest86.
If I enter the BIOS and run diag tests, the errors is not detected.
I run several stress test programs (cpuburn, crashme, stress), and they have worked successfully.
I can not understand why memtest86 always hung.

Is this a feature of this hardware, or it is some sort of malfunction ?
Does anyone saw the successful memtest86 results on this hardware ?

Thanks!

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

I would try running a similar memory diagnostic program called memtest86+. It is based upon the older memtest86 program but is still being actively developed. You can find it here: http://www.memtest.org/ I have used that program in 600E systems without any problems.

Hi!
Dear rkawakami,
I forgot to write that I also tried memtest86+ program.
It was successfully installed in my debian Squeeze, and even appeared in the grub2 menu,
but does not start, only black screen I saw.
I will try memtest86+ somehow once again, but
not now, I'm already a little tired of this laptop.
Perhaps someone has already encountered this problem on this notebook, and answer me.
Thanks!

If I remember right, I did have some problems with trying to boot memtest86+ from a CD before on a 600X. That's why I've always used a diskette since then with the 600 series systems. I believe that it would display an "I999nnnn" error message on an otherwise black screen; a boot error code.
