External Case for Thinkpad Optical Drive

#1 Post by ZaZ » Mon May 31, 2010 6:18 am

Anyone know if there's an external case made for Thinkpad drives, specifically a 12.7mm drive for the R series drives? Thanks for any help.

I've bought something very similar to ebay item 140408838769 at the same $10 shipped price, but these are for 9.5mm drives. Works great. I suppose you might be able to expand the case with some or a lot of difficulty. :)

Thanks for the replies. I was kind of hoping for USB. I use it on more than notebooks, which makes USB much more usable. Anyone know of one of those? Thanks again.

The one I listed is USB or card. Comes with both cables. I use it on the destop, it adds a DVD RW or the Ultrabay mounted HDD easy!

Thanks Ron. I looked up the part number on ebay and the one with lots of pictures showed only the PC Card connector. Would you happen to know if the case can be USB power or is an adapter required. Thanks again.

Adapter is always required. But for that matter, I have used it with a cable off the spare USB port. Seems to work fine with the included or the "other" cable.

The ebay one I linked says "USB" in the title at the top of the page.

The one I bought, from a different seller, slightly different design, is USB. That's how I connect it to the computer, and it works fine, even with only one port for power.

Thanks RBS, but that's for a 9.5mm drive. I need a 12.7mm case. I already got a thing the allows me to connect the drive. I was just hoping for a case for protection.

Thanks for the reply. The case looks like it it'll fit, but you still got the space where the easy eject sits. I think I'll stick with what I got since I don't use my optical drive much unless I can find one designed for a ThinkPad drive. Thanks again.
