Which DVD burner?

#1 Post by Zeno Arrow » Mon May 31, 2010 1:38 pm

Hi all, first post, looking forward to spending time here learning about my favourite machine. :D

Got a T61, currently it has a DVD/CD-RW drive, really want to upgrade to a DVD burner, I tend to make lots of DVDs of stuff for friends and it's a pain to have to use another computer when I'd much rather do it all from my ThinkPad. :)

From what I can tell from the Lenovo website, there are two models of DVD burner that are suitable for the T61. These are the ThinkPad DVD Ultrabay Slim Burner (41N5643) and the ThinkPad Super Multi-Burner Ultrabay Slim drive (40Y8623). Links here:

The issue is, I can't tell these drives apart! I mean they've got different names, but the specs seem just about the same, in fact I haven't noticed a single difference in the specs. There's got to be a difference otherwise there wouldn't be two different products. Can anyone here explain what's different between the two?

Oh and just to say, found a deal here that I might be following up on, depending on all of your advice:

Thanks in advance,
Tom

The "deal" you talk about (3rd link) is the correct drive for your machine. I don't know about the first link. I have no record of that part number, and the picture doesn't match the description. The picture is a drive for a T400/T500/W500 which uses a different (SATA) interface for the ultrabay. You can tell by the piece sticking out from the back. The description says ultra ATA, but the picture doesn't match. The Lenovo site is screwed up. If you like the price, then the 40Y8623 is the correct one.

Thank you for your advice richk, good job I didn't buy the other one then!

I'm assuming that your use of commas (i.e. "deal") indicates that I could get a better price elsewhere, to be honest it's the first place I found them in stock in the UK from what seems like a reputable dealer, I'll definitely have a proper look around now that I know the model to go for.

Cheers buddy,
Tom

Not quite what you're looking for (as in it's not internal), but I use one of these with my X200s when I'm travelling:

Top loading makes for easy disc changes, bus powered using the USB cable. Well reviewed too.

Added advantage is that it should be be more up-to-date than a DVD intended for a T61.

I don't know about UK prices, and I deal with used equipment. It is more than I generally pay.

I bought two times from this seller, all was fine (product, dispatch, packaging, shipping time). Anyway, be "warned", the gift - that ultrabay travel cover - has the curved bezel (for T4x series), not the flat one for T6x (at least, this was my luck - but, it's a gift, after all :) ).

Was there ever a flat bezel cover released?
