T41p External DVI at 1600x1200 w/ 1400x1050 ATI Fire GL
All,
I'm hoping someone out there has attempted the driver installs and modder update on the particular Thinkpad configuration that I have, namely a nearly-new T41P with an ATI FireGL T2 128Meg card.
My goal, similar to many others on the forum, is to have an external DVI out resolution greater than 1280x1024 (specifically, 1600x1200) through my Mini-Dock II. I'd like to be able to flip between 1400x1050 on the Thinkpad and 1600x1200 on the external flat panel (but not both at the same time).
The hurdle, in my case, seems to be getting the modifications to work while still maintaining the ability to run the Thinkpad's LCD at 1400x1050 when not using the external display.
The modder seems to allow me to achieve the 1600x1200 by using the Radeon drivers, but the install seems to not recognize 1400x1050 as a valid resolution for the Thinkpad display once the modded drivers have been installed (It is not listed as a valid mode in Display, Settings, Advanced, Adapter, List All Modes.)
The modder doesn't seem to be able to modify the Fire GL drivers directly (going to http://mirror.ati.com/support/driver.html, selecting Win XP, Fire GL, Fire GL T2 128), or more accurately I have not been successful in doing so.
After many days of attempts (and a great deal of trying to diff inf files and such), I've run out of ideas. I'm hoping someone else has attempted and succeeded at maintaining the 1400x1050 resolution on the Thinkpad and can drive the external DVI at resolutions greater than 1280x1024 as well.
Many thanks for any suggestions anyone might have.
Sincerely,
Mark.

The Omega Drivers are pre-modified for Mobility Radeons and Mobility FireGL's. 1400x1050 should be available as a resolution option. Please let us know if this works.

Patje's Mobility Modding only mods the drivers for Mobility compatability. It doesn't address the resolution limitations (e.g. lack of 1400x1050) of the standard Catalyst driver.

All,
Thanks for the suggestions!
With only one minor hiccup the Omega Center drivers worked like a charm.
(The hardware was not recognized by the install program, but I was able to go through the control panel and "update" the driver, pointing to the INF file present in the files the install program extracted.)
Thanks!

OL,
Can you supply a URL or other pointer to the "dna drivers" you mentioned in your post? Also, do you know if they support the 1400x1050 resolution on the T41p's?
Thanks,

OK...just so I do it right, I've got the Omega drivers installed. It comes with reasonably complex UN-install directions (Uninstall drivers, boot up in Safe Mode, run DCleaner_Omega.exe, run yet another Omega uninstall program...sheeessh). Should I do all of this before doing the DNA drivers?OL wrote:you should try the dna drivers (based on catalyst 4.which supports the firegl T2 mobile chipset and which can installed easily (it uninstalls the previous drivers itself).
And, I guess I should have the latest IBM T41p display driver pack around, just in case, yes?

You've found the same things that I have... OmegaDrivers do not have proper OGL support for the FireGL T2 right now, and in my experience the "modder" didn't work against cat. 4.8 or 4.9 either. (no openGL again). the only drivers that worked for me thus far were IBM's official ones, but they're slower and quite a bit older than everything else out there. I'm going to try those DNA drivers now.
dna powerstrip : solutions
The dna driver enable me to play DOOM3 which imply a rather good support for opengl.
It can uninstall the previous driver so you do not need doing it yourself.
Nevertheless some people think it is better to completely uninstall the drivers for graphic card to avoid some issues :
see http://www.radeonthetop.com/a/101-2.html (french inside!!)
or download drivecleaner
http://www.driverheaven.net/cleaner/
There is an utility powerstrip, used mainly to overclock a card, which can be used to set new resolution for the driver.
I am currently trying catalyst 4.9 whith the modder to enable it to work on the T41p and I have set the resolution 1400x.... with powerstrip. (but doom3 doesn't work with the standard catalyst on my notebook!)

Well, DNA drivers don't seem to include 1600x1200 in 3D out of the box. My desktop resolution was fine at 1600x1200 though. I didn't try any external displays.
OpenGL worked, but GLQuake (what I've been using to test GL-capability because I happen to have it on the desktop) wouldn't let me run at 1600x1200 with my T42p. the IBM drivers have no problems with that resolution though. With the DNA drivers, the desktop was properly at 1600, but it wouldn't run OGL at that resolution.
OGL did seem to work ok at 640x480, so the driver *does* work to some extent. I suppose I could put the DNA drivers back on and then try powerstrip, but the resolution was already *there* (i was using it in 2d). It just didn't go 1600 in OGL.
I didn't test direct3d at all but the control panel definately saw/supported it so i don't see why it wouldn't work.
personally, i'm waiting for omega or patje to get cat 4.9 working right with the mobility stuff, I don't trust the DNA drivers. note that on every driver i've used so far, NONE of them have any OpenGL settings on the ATI control panel - I think this may just be a function of having a FireGL card rather than a normal radeon though.

DVI output via the Thinkpad dock. Thanks Omega!

This forum is the greatest. I have an A31p (2653-H5U) in a dock (263110U) with two L200p monitors (and the ThinkPad closed) - - one plugged in to the VGA output and one plugged in to the dvi output. I have been fussing for a week trying to get both screens at 1600x1200. Whatever is in Omega drivers did the trick. I downloaded the drivers and clicked on OK all the way through install, kept my fingers crossed, and voila - I've got two screens at 1600 x 1200. I also downloaded UltraMon and it gives me some control on what is on the two screens. Learning by experimenting. Thanks.

How are you guys getting this working?
I've got a T41 w/ Radeon Mobility 7500. I just installed the 5.2 Omega drivers since that is the version that people are reporting success with.
I cannot seem to set up DVI output to be 1600x1200. The presentation manager (Fn+F7) only allows me to go up to 1280x1024. Nothing shows up on the screen at all when I use the lower resolution (guess I should expect that) and I cannot figure out how to get the system to use the right resolution. What are you all doing?
Thanks!
