I have a 4 year old T60p type 2007-B49. This morning when I went to wake it up, it emitted a one long, continuous beep and did nothing on screen. After a few seconds, I powered down. I started up, it went to the Windows XP splash screen and gave out a long beep. Scared, I powered down again. Powered up in Safe Mode, got a bunch of gibberish (safe mode has always been janky on this machine). Powered down, shook the machine around (see below), powered up in Last Known Good, and it was fine. I'm working on it now.
But I want to figure out what happened. My suspiciouN is the fan. Here's why:
1. I had a fan go out half a year ago ("Fan Error" at startup, no boot). I replaced it.
2. Two months ago, I took the laptop on a trip. When I got to my hotel, I got a "Fan Error" message. When I returned home, everything was fine. Something must've been jostled loose on the outbound trip and jostled back into place on the return trip.
However, I did NOT get a "Fan Error" this time, just a continuous beep. The beep sounded like the beep emitted by my PC when the CPU overheats, also leading me to think it's the fan. My CPU temps are at 53c right now. I don't know if that's normal or not for a laptop.
Thanks for your advice in advance!

Re: one long continuous beep T60p -- fan issue?
Two or more beeps, or a continuous beep. Operating System starts successfully - If a Mini PCI Ethernet card is installed, confirm that Alert On LAN 2 in BIOS Setup Utility is disabled.

Re: one long continuous beep T60p -- fan issue?
Thanks for the help. I looked through my device manager, and I didn't see anything called a Mini PCI Ethernet card. My ethernet is just the Intel PRO/1000 PL thing. Though I'm not sure exactly what to look for.
Should I just change that BIOS setting anyway?
Thanks again.

I would change the BIOS setting.
