Any way to get a replacement screen.

The gridlines are finally getting to me and while i posted a willing to buy in the Marketplace. I doubt that will get much attention. I'd like to know if there is anyplace that I could get a screen upgrade at a decent price. Is it possible that a computer repair retail shop would perhaps carry laptop screens, or am I just going to have to wait. Or pay 300 dollars on a possibly horrible 1080 glossy display which may or may not work regardless of what the seller tells me?

Braddah, its not worth voiding your warranty IMO. Those kind of exotic upgrades are better planned for end of usage lifecycle on your NEW machine. Is it a smart move for a little preference in not viewing some small lines that can be adjusted out maybe on brightness functionality?

Adjusting the brightness just makes it worse. They actually seem to occationally give me a headache. Which is bothersome. Perhaps I can play it as a defect and get a different make of screen from Lenovo?

Braddah, the headache is from aversion to LED versus CCFL displays. Some people do get headaches from LED displays. Not sure how to fix that.

My 13" MBP (which gets brighter than the ThinkPad display) and iPad don't give me headaches.

I don't think any computer shops are going to have genuine replacement screens. You can go through the hardware maintenance manual to get the part numbers for the various screens. Google/ebay them to see if anything comes up. I suspect the T510 is so new that any screens are going to be compatibles, which aren't that great in my experience, or genuine screens that are expensive. Have you called support and explained the situation? Perhaps you can get them to swap the screen for a different version or is this just a case of you don't like the lower resolution?

This has nothing to do with lower resolution. 1280x1024 on a 17" even looks fine to me. It's these stupid verticle grid lines that are very very distracting. Also, I have no clue which Lenovo number I would need to call, everything seems so hidden on their website.

Braddah, the most practical thing to do is to get used to what you have. If you keep looking at the vertical lines then of course you are not focusing on the content on the screen. It's not defective and they are under no obligation to swap anything. Your other option is to sell it and get a different brand. But is there a better choice? I'm on your side but there is not much that is possible. We all need to cope with unexpected product nuances.

I guess you're right. Maybe I can get used to it :?. Besides, this model is perfect otherwise. No creaking, or keyboard flex, or high pitch whine. It's amazing otherwise. I was expecting some keyboard flex and a high pitched whine especially but nope. None of that on my system. The only problem I've had other than the screen is that I was not prepared for just HOW BAD the speakers are. Even worse than the T43's, luckily, they service fine for Team Fortress 2 and the occational podcast. Just anything with deep mids and bass is immediatly horrible.

Whoa now Braddah, I didnt mean to offend you. No harm no foul intended. BTW I owned a Dell CRT (rebadged Trinitron) which was a big thing in past technology cycles. Unlike other brands, they had two horizonal limes suspending something in the screen. They were actually wires running from one side of the bezel to the other. Bothered me that the glass looked like it was cut into three panels. Plus I thought it made me dizzy. But later concluded that after a month I didn't even notice the lines and the dizziness was remedied by adjusting the brightness, contrast, color calibration etc. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trinitron

I am looking at the first photo in that thread, which looks horrible indeed! I wouldn't want to use such a screen for more than 10 seconds. As discussed in that thread, it is a fixable defect, so give Lenovo Support a call.

I also want a screen replacement when the warranty is off, a 1680x1050 one since 1280x800 is a bit small and I've got a dead pixel already. (As far as I know, I get only a replacement with 5-6)

Um, this will probably make me sound like a jerk but a lot of the guys on NBR are morons that have completely invalid, unjustified bickering and complaints about Thinkpads because they transitioned from their Vaio or Macbook and want some of the more consumery features or get completely upset over a laptop so perfect the only thing they can pick about is how the palmrest deflects by a half millimeter when they push on it with their finger then come to the conclusion that Thinkpads are infinitely inferior compared to a Macbook because Macbooks are super rigid and because old world concepts of quality define "hardness" as being quality, then Macbooks are superior.

But we all know super high hardness isn't quality, after all you have high carbon iron which is well, junk in terms of structural usage.

Oh and yes, many problems with Thinkpads ARE psychological in nature moreso than justified, go find an actual, competent mechanical engineer and they'll help you understand.

Edit: Can't tell whats wrong about that screen, it looks better than some of the HP and Dell offerings. Actually if I placed my face close to my T43 with the Flexview panle, I can see the lines too.

It just goes to show, when you finally get your hands on a good computer, keep it until it dies. There are so many ways in which manufacturers can screw up, the chances of getting a really nice one w/out problems are small.
