Upgrading or Buy Window 7

#1 Post by roumancesoireee » Wed Jun 09, 2010 10:04 pm

Hi guys,

I am a noobie. I have a Lenovo T61 which is currently running Windows Vista Basic and I was thinking about the switch to Windows 7. I have a couple questions

1) is it possible to upgrade from Windows Vista Basic to 7 or do I need a better version.

2) I wanna do a clean reset and then do a new install due to some issues that I am experiencing with my laptop... so would the upgrade would pretty much the same as the full version?

Thanks

I believe Microsoft only allows you to upgrade to the equivalent version.

IF you go to the MSFT website and/or are willing to at least take 10 mins to search online you can find the answer. If you have a more technical question then post back something.

run the upgrade advisor and see if you might need to do anything for upgrading to 7. you can use windows 7 upgrade version to go from your vista basic to 7 home or professional or ultimate. i used it to go from xp pro to 7 professional on 2 x32's and i used it to go from xp to 7 ultimate on 1 x32. you will have to do a custom install using the upgrade and it will put your old os in a folder called windows old. you can access the files in there but you can't run any of the programs. you will be able to see your movies and pictures. windows upgrade actually brought my pics and movies over to 7 with it. you will have to reinstall your programs so i hope you have your discs for that, or you should back everything up with an external hard drive so you can reinstall everything later. you can't use the anytime upgrade that's just for going up the scale within 7. like from home to pro to ultimate. if you don't need bitlocker then you don't really need ultimate. 7 professional has a lot of ways to network and it's really easy to use, that's why i got professional. very smooth and easy to use os. if you need to do a clean install on a bare hard drive windows 7 upgrade won't work. you will need the full version. stay away from the oem version, that lives and dies on that pc. you can never reuse it if the hard drive fails or whatever.

also if you use the 7 upgrade and you're going from vista basic to windows 7 basic you won't have to do a custom install but if you are having issues with vista you probably want to do the custom install. none of the problems you are having with vista will follow you to 7 with a custom install.
