X41T and external monitor resolution

#1 Post by tsservo » Thu Jun 10, 2010 7:21 am

Hi all. I've got an X41T with Win7 and an external monitor (1680x1050) hooked up to a dock.

From the time that I installed Win7 until two days ago, the external monitor was running just fine at 1680x1050 with an extended desktop and the notebook running at 1024x768. I'd have to set the external monitor resolution manually almost every time I docked the computer, but it still displayed fine (the docked resolution never "stuck" as it did with XP).

Two days ago, I seem to have lost the ability to run the monitor at 1680. I get no widescreen options, just standard 4:3 options (800, 1024, 1280, 1600, and some newly absurd 2048).

I've checked for updates, can't find any Win7 drivers for the Intel 910/915 garbage in this machine, can't seem to force it back into 1680, no "display all resolutions" is available in "Advanced graphics", I've rebooted with every combo of notebook/monitor I can think of, and even reset the bios to default.

I've not installed any software or new hardware.

It just... disappeared. And after "working" fine since Win7 was released.

Someone, please help...

Thanks

I'm surprised you ever got it to run at widescreen resolution. The standard drivers do not support them and you need to get the IGED drivers to support it. These drivers also have a couple of other functionality deficits... I don't remember, but I just remember switching back to the regular ones and just dealing with 4:3.

Try installing drivers for the monitor. If that doesn't work try deleting the monitor from device manager and reboot.

I searched high and low for the monitor drivers, but no dice. While looking for them however I came across someone in an nvidia forum who suggested that the monitor be unplugged for a few minutes, both video and power, then the PC booted up and everything plugged back in while device manager was open.

I figured chicken bones and candles were next so why not...

Did that, Device Manager and it had a seizure, and when it was finished the monitor was back to normal.

Yea, no idea either.

Originally to get the widescreen working in Win7, I got the latest drivers off the Intel site, which were XP v6.14.something. I installed those in Vista SP2 compatibility mode. I remember the machine looking like it locked up tight, but it was all good in a few minutes. A reboot later and it was detecting happily, aside from the previously mentioned have to randomly reset while redocking issue.

Thanks all.

Just in case, make sure the monitor is still set appropriately. Some monitors, like an Acer I have, require certain settings before it will auto-detect.
