Mapping "Thinkpad" key to "Windows" key?

#1 Post by CoolDragon » Fri Mar 04, 2005 5:50 pm

Currently I mapped my left ALT key to the "Windows" key, I am wondering though, if it is possible to map the "Thinkpad" key to the "Windows" key.

Honestly speaking, I don't like the hidden partition stuff at all, I have a DOS boot disk and a ghost image that can recover my Windows XP in 3 minutes. Of course, you can customize the "Thinkpad" key to do this without the boot disk, but after booting into Windows, I prefer to have a "Windows" key.

CoolDragon,

As far as I know and have seen, you cannot change the assignment of the ThinkPad key. I think IBM is very proud of the button, because I agree with you that it makes sense to be able to have it do something else.

Mine launches the default screen saver but with the below you can make it a WinKey:

Thanks guys for answering my question. This is a great Thinkpad forum!

By the way, I just don't understand why IBM doesn't put a Windows key on Thinkpad.

Windows Key

#9 Post by Gee » Fri Mar 25, 2005 2:39 am

Some of the cheaper ThinkPads have a Windows Key.

I agree with IBM's decision to not have the Windows Key. That is admitting that Windows runs the world.

What good is a Windows Key, if you are not using Windows?

Quote from the site that selvan777 posted:
The ThinkPad key only works as a 'hotkey', and can only detect whether it has been pressed, not whether it is being held down, so key combinations cannot be detected.
So you can access the Start-Menu via the Thinkpad key.
No key combination like Win+E will work.

Ctrl+Esc works fine for me but I don't use the above.

Can anybody tell me if the the thinkpad button remapper linked above is a process that must constantly run in the background?
IBM ThinkPad T42p (2373-7XU): 1.8GHz/1024MB, 15" UXGA, DVD-RW, 80GB, 2200b/g.
T42 (2374-3VU): 1.7GHz/512MB, 14.1"SXGA+, DVD-RW, 80GB, 2200b/g.

No, it just does the setting. It is the Thinkpad Hotkey Manager, tphkmgr.exe, that always runs in the background (unless you unload it, in which case NO Hotkey assignments will work).

well... i think some of it is because they have to pay a sort of royalty to M$ for every TP they produce... better to just use a 3rd party remapper

i personally like KeyTweak (remapped Insert to Win) :)
