T40 hang: Shutdown & Restart; no prob w Standby or Hibernate

#1 Post by TP4me » Sun Jun 13, 2010 1:23 pm

1) No prob w Standby or Hibernate, Resume & startup are fine, but this T40 hangs at Shutdown & Restart-- usually after the chime, processing "Windows is shutting down"

Considerations: Running XP Pro SP3, fully updated. Problems started about the time I updated the ThinkVantage package, but I think it was actually just before. (The past week has been just crazy!) I KNOW the drive is too full, only 2.8 GB free of 80, but far improved from the 369 MB free a few weeks ago when all was fine! I have to move/dump more stuff belonging to my wife now that she has my new computer. (The other is a gift, a Compaq CQ60, and a very good computer, but I still love the old T40.)

2) Annoying also is the fact that the UltraNav tray icon is now persistent, despite my repeatedly applying Show/Hide in the Control Panel. This MUST be related to the update, and perhaps will actually resolve when I can achieve a proper restart....

3) Do I / can I have USB 2 support on a 2373-75U? Perhaps it's on one port only? Sometimes the popup comes that a device would work better with USB2, but other times not. Afraid I've not been real attentive to this issue....

Your help will be appreciated!

Stan

PS: AVIRA, MBAM, SAS, et al declare me good on the viral/malware front. I started using Secunia PSI not long ago, am wondering if it is such a good idea.

1.) You're going to have to do some homework for the shuitdown problem, Start with this guide.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308029
2.) Don't know but you can try uninstalling/reinstalling the Ultranav utility.
3.) T40's do have USB 2.0 support out of the box, but they also have a well known problem where that stops working and the ports revert to USB 1.0. It is believed to be a Southbridge issue and can 'possibly' be fixed by reflowing or reballing the Southbridge. Contact member name poshgeordie on this forum for a repair estimate.

Hi Stan

Further to HarryC's post, I can confirm that your T40 USB port should run at 2.0, and the problem is most likely due to an unsoldered Southbridge chip.

I have a company in UK which resolders these chips using Infrared reflowing and would be happy to give you a quote to fix it.

Have a look at my advert at the top of every page in this forum: thinkpads.com...f=2&t=73945 for more information of IR reflowing etc, and if you'd like a proper quote to email me on nick@reflowrepairs.com saying which country you're from (unless the small puddle in S Europe is the UK!).

Thanks, gents! I'm going to be swamped for the next several days. That plus the fact they are making "improvements" to utilities in my area mean I'll have very little internet time. Will followup further as I can, but I do appreciate the replies.
