Well besides those low-latency Patriot modules I've run my X31 with Crucial and Hynix PC2700 and Kingston, OCZ, and no-name PC3200 modules without problems.

The only case I know of where modules are 'too fast' is with the Kingston HyperX PC2-6400 modules where many laptops apparently can't run with the extremely low latencies set in their SPD (400MHz at 4-4-4-12 or 333MHz at 3-4-4-10).

Also if you buy from a vendor using their 'configurator' I believe they will usually guarantee compatibility. Crucial and Coast-to-Coast Memory (18004memory) have these for example.

Well, the 1GB PC2700 I bought on ebay arrived. I have to check what it was SUPPOSED to be. What arrived was Centon brand.

RAM slot 1 WAS empty.
RAM slot 2 has 256MB generic RAM.

Booted OK with no probs of conflicting RAM speeds.
DL'd GParted and tested the new 1GB. It seems fine.
I didn't see a choice to test the 256MB stick.

I installed W7 via my X3 Ultrabay. All seems well. The trackpoint works. I hear appropriate beeps when starting-up/shutting-down but otherwise there's no sound in the X31 or X3.
Device Manager shows a multimedia device and two other devices need drivers.

I have a Linksys 802.11b PCMCIA card and an 802.11n draft dongle.
Would you recommend using one of those or should I get an IBM, internal wireless card?

Thanks

Huh :?: The GParted application is a graphical partition editor for creating, reorganizing, and deleting disk partitions. How did you use that to test RAM?

The Gparted bootable live CD includes Memtest if I recall correctly.

I suggest DO NOT USE "Genuine power adapter bought on Ebay"...I lost T43 and (just 2 weeks ago) X31 - blown by this chinese fake rubbish. I do not believe any of them (sold on Ebay) are genuine...I will never ever buy any power adapter on Ebay again...

I did not know any X31 was made without wireless. I thought X30 was the last model that could be ordered without it. Does your X31 have the antennas, but no card?

There is a good chance that the dongle will outperform the PC card and the internal card. But you might value the convenience of internal wireless over slightly better performance. If your X31 already has antennas, just an empty slot, then it would be so cheap and easy to find a wireless card and install it.

My X31 came from the factory as wireless upgradable. It has the antenna wrapped around the LCD but no internal card.
I've been using an 802.11n dongle I got for $11. It's about 3" long. The X31 has only one USB port. So, I use a hub for the 802.11n dongle and a micro BT dongle for my mouse. It would be convenient to have them both inside the computer. BT cards on ebay are about $15. A few include the antenna. Wireless cards are about $10. I think it's strange that BT cards cost more than an 802.11b/g card.

Can my X31 use ECC, Registered RAM or does it have to be NON-ECC and UN-Registered?
Thanks

You sure about that? Is one broken? Because there should be two.

Holy S, Batman. You're right! HA, ha! I completely overlooked the one at the back.
Now I'm even more mobile, sleek and slick with a three inch dongle on the side that matches the case perfectly.

The right rear corner isn't secure to the case. It allows for a little movement. Is there a tab I can connect or that maybe broken?

In case anyone is interested I have found a source for those CAS 2 PC2700 modules I mentioned earlier: http://www.memory4less.com/m4l_itemdeta ... d=27129445 . I don't think anyone else besides Patriot made modules at that speed.
At $113 they're around 3x the price of the more common CAS 2.5 modules so probably not worth it for most people.

EDIT: Apparently they don't actually have them any more.
