Memory upgrade guidance needed...
Hello to all that read my post. I just recently returned from Iraq and purchased a refurbished T23 from Tiger Direct for a decent price (considering I'm on a tight buget). The specs are Intel Pentium 3, 1Ghz, 128 SDRAM, 20GB, DVD ROM, Windows 2000 Pro. I have decided that I want to upgrade my memory but I do not want to go with IBM memory because of how expensive it is. I have been shoping around namely the tiger direct website for buget/generic memory but I can't decide on one as I am not familiar with the generic brands. I would appreciate if someone could recommend one that is fairly reliable. I am aware that none of them are going to equal IBM brand memory in performance and reliability, but as I've already stated, money is an issue. Thank you in advance for your assistance.
Good choice of laptop
The T23 can use generic PC133 memory since it doesn't have the memory limitations of the intel 440BX chipset. Makes it a lot cheaper to upgrade and as far as I know, it's not too picky about ram timings and things like that.
So you should be able to just get some generic PC133 sodimms and it should work without any problems as long as the memory doesn't have any faults.

check out www.crucial.com - very reliable ram at good prices!

Thanks for the replies fellas... Could someone give me tips on installing the memory. After searching the web I plan on getting a 128MB from PNY that is about $42. Hopefully the upgrade can give me some decent speed. If you have any other advice you are more than welcome to send it my way as I am pretty novice when it comes to CPU's. Being in the business of beans and bullets, kind of takes away some of the time I would like to dedicate to learning about computers. At any rate the knowledge that you guys can provide, in my case will suffice. Thanks!
If you go to the IBM PC Support site:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... country=us
and key in your model and type, you can find and download the hardware manual. That will tell you how to maintain the laptop. In the case of my T23 (that I sold), the memory was underneath a removable door on the bottom of the machine. Very easy to install/change memory. ... JD Hurst

If you can afford it, spring for the 256 MB chip. The more memory the merrier. According to crucial.com the max you can have is two strips of 512, totaling one gigabyte. Ideally, if you put in a 256 now you'll have 384 total, which should be perfectly adequate.
You should enjoy your T23. They are good machines. I know several people who refuse to go from them to the newer T4x series because those T23s are built so well.
By the way, I appreciate the sacrifices you've made for our country. Keep up the good work!

You can use any inexpensive PC133 memory in the T23, checkout your local BestBuy, CompUSA, etc. for sales. I wouldn't bother with a 128MB stick as you can find 256MB memory for very little more.USArmyStaffSgt. wrote:JD, Matt I appreciate your advice. By the way Matt I'm stationed in your neck of the woods (Midwest) Ft. Riley, Kansas.
You can also check http://dealram.com/ for cheap memory.
Welcome home from an old 9ID Ft. Riley grunt!

I have recently purchase two refurb T23's, one for me and one for my daughter. You will enjoy this excellent machine.
The particular model (4RU) we got comes with 256MB RAM and I upgraded with another 256MB purchased from IBM Canada for Cdn$89. This would make your price from IBM ~US$74. This will give you a baseline.
Like another poster, I would strongly recommend you add 256MB. I am a pretty heavy user and have a little indicator showing how much memory is free. I haven't got into that last 128MB yet but I have gone beyond 256MB used. Even on a tight budget, I believe you'll be glad to have that extra 128.
A fellow in Germany has a nice site on the T23. He has a link on installing extra memory complete with picture.

ENJOY!!
