Recommendation for WLAN card to replace AR5212 Ubuntu 10.04

#1 Post by kennyschiff » Fri Jun 25, 2010 12:45 pm

Am having intermittent connectivity issues with my stock Atheros AR5212 on my X61 using Ubuntu 10.04. Am wondering if there is a known to be good b/g min-PCIe card that I can replace my AR5212 with that would be more solid in Ubuntu?

As per ThinkWiki, the X60 line shipped with an Intel 3945ABG miniPCIe card as an option:

Before you decide to swap altogether, you may try reseating the card, followed by reseating the antenna connector. Worth a shot.

Also, under what OS are you having this issue? (EDIT: I'm an idiot - you said Ubuntu 10.04 right in the title!) I've had some issues with intermittent connectivity on certain laptops in Linux (Debian, in my case), that seem to go away when I try Windows. Aggravating, since I prefer Linux on a laptop.

The point is, software can still be the culprit in an intermittent-connection situation, so try to rule that out if you have the resources to do so. Try it in Windows.
Laptop OS of choice: Debian 5.0 GNU/Linux
T43p - my regular workhorse
X40 - 300X CF SSD instead of the stock 1.8" hard drive
Work in progress: X60

Just as a verification, my X60s comes with the 3945 Intel card which is *very* solid on Ubuntu.

This is *exactly* the reverse of the problem I've faced recently: a machine with a 3945 was suffering from the "new and improved" driver in Ubuntu 10.04 (read: broken by bad QA), so I swapped it for an Atheros-based card that has since worked perfectly. (The Debian drivers for the 3945 worked fine though... but I'm gonna avoid getting into a distro flamewar here ;) )
