password for Rescur&Recovery on T42?

#1 Post by paulm308 » Sat Mar 05, 2005 8:46 pm

Do Thinkpads have a default password for Rescur&Recovery? Once I ran Rescur&Recovery occasionally, then a window pop out, which said please type in password. I've tried the adm. psw, but it didn't work. Then I clicked on the psw hint, it said s&n. I didn't understand, does it have a default password or something?

S&N looks like the serial number of your computer. There should be a serial number under the computer. Try that.

I am sorry I misled you. The hint was n&b. I tried the serial number, it didn't work either.

usually the R&R password is the XP admin password. But if a new user accout is created (by hand or with the installation of certain software) you get a pop up window to choose if the new password should be used for R&R. So check for additional user accounts and see if a password is set.

If you really can't figure out the password the only way is uninstalling and doing a fresh installation of R&R. Then it should be set to the admin password again.

I've tried all the possible passwords...I just don't understand what the hint means. I remembered that I didn't set this password. How can I uninstall R&R and reinstall it?

Thanks! I just tried all the passwords again. I noticed that after I typed the incorrect password, the windows said Please Contact your Administrator! I was wondering if I could change the password when I logged in using Administrator, but I couldn't find a way or a application to change it.

what happens if you change your XP administrator password? Perhaps a window pops up which allows you to set the R&R password again. Give it a try.

This is what happened for me (change either my account PW or Administrator PW). But, after changing the PW & confirming with R&R that it should change the password for R&R too, the new password STILL didn't work for R&R. The "Hint" field did update with the new stuff I put in there, but the PW didn't. Eventually gave up, called IBM, they sent CDs.

Yes, a window pop out, I tried to change the passowrd, but it still required the old password.
Is ordering CDs from IBM the only way to solve it? Can't I uninstall it? What I am concerned about now is if it will still require the password while I am trying to uninstall it?

no, I never got asked for a password when I unistalled R&R.

This sounds really strange to me. I would ask IBM support why it doesn't let you change the password.

Thanks for you guys' replies, I've downloaded the R&R. I'll do the uninstalltion and installation after I confirm there is no better way. I've already asked for IBM support through IBM request, hope they can solve this problem.

Another try...I uninstalled R&R and reinstalled it...but I still required a password...as before. The engineer from IBM gave me a reply which said the only way to remove the password was to format the harddisk, then installed it from recovery CDs. Does this mean I have to order CDs from IBM? Any one has ordered recovery CDs before? Need some instruction, thanks.

In Canada, call 1-800-426-2255 for support. Have your machine with you when you call. If they cannot take care of your problem, contact Bill and he will help you. If you have difficulty with either, send me a Private Message, and I will send you my Cell Phone number.

Thanks guys. I have contacted Bill after I noticed this problem, Bill suggested me to post in the forum. I'd like to call support, but I am currently travelling out of Canada, it seemed I couldn't figure out a way to call a 1-800 toll free from here China to Canada...
