X301 and Vodafone and AT&T Wireless WAN (HSPA) Driver for W7

#1 Post by Edmond Dantes » Wed Jun 30, 2010 2:46 pm

Ok, I (Lenovo) did it again.
System Update showed me this update: "Vodafone and AT&T Wireless WAN (HSPA) Driver for Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit)".
As I'm using Vodafone and I had a AT&T driver, I decided to update.
The result is, that now the GPS doesn't work.
Yes, I'm in a place where the GPS signal is present (my house, with the previous driver I was able to get 6/7 satellites).
What happens? Lenovo TV GPS stays there trying to fix the satellites, but nothing happens. I can't recover the system to a previous state, as I updated Flash player too, and Windows only show me the possibility to roll back this update.
So, apart advicing everyone not to update, I kindky ask:
- where can I found the previous driver? I searched the web without success...
- why does Lenovo deploy driver which can cause problems (I just had one updating the BT driver last week! .msi installer problem, error 1935...)?
Thanks to everyone
Edmond

Is your current build from a factory install? If yes, the original driver is on your C drive in a sub-folder of /drivers or /ibmtools

Hi Harryc

Yes, my current bild is from a factory install.
In C:\DRIVERS\WIN\GPS I have a setup.exe.
Should I try run this?

Thanks

Sure, why not. Uninstall the old driver first.

Ok, I found in the Net the drive 7uw706ww.zip, which is Version 6.1.4.2, while the updated versione is 6.1.10.5 (7UW708WW).
I tried again the GPS, and it wasn't working.
Anyway, before downgrading, I tried to reinstall the new driver, downloading the .exe instead going through System Update.
Result: now GPS is working (same place, same conditions, just 5 minutes later)!

Don't know where the difference is...

Anyway, thanks Harryc for your advices.

I have been too optimistic. :?
To make the GPS work with the new driver, at least on my X301, you have to install the driver every time! I mean, the GPS works only the first time after the driver installation.

I went back to the previous version, and everything seems to work as before.

I must say I'm tired with this not enough tested updates...

There isn't. Sometimes a driver install will look like it goes through alright but actually doesn't. I had this problem once with my Lenovo laptop. I can't remember what driver it was, but I installed and update and things weren't working. The CSR had me redownload and reinstall the driver and everything went back to working without issue.
