Celeron in Thinkpad R60e can not upgrade???
Hi guys.
I'm kinda a bit confused to upgrading my laptop processor.
I had Thinkpad R60e whic the specs are:
Celeron M 430 (1.73Ghz, 1 MB l2 Cache, 533MHzFSB)
Chipset 945 (Socket M)
HD:80GB
RAM 1GBDDR2
OS Win 7
with the new BIOS upgrade ver 2008 (at least the last rev in lenovo website)
I had already have T5300 (socket M) to put in the R60e but it wont boot at all!
I dont know what the problem is?
is it R60e Can not be upgrade at all??
but R60e in lenovo website they had version T7200, T5600 and Coresolo T130
why my R60e can not be upgrade?
Can any of you tech majors please help me with this??
Thank You in advance for your kind attention:)

Re: Celeron in Thinkpad R60e can not upgrade???
Welcome to the forum.
Before you do any upgrades, make sure your laptop has the latest BIOS version installed!
You need to find out what revision your motherboard is.
Go here: http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php and download this utility. It will tell you.
You also need to find out what chipset your motherboard has: 940Gxx or 945Gxx
If 940Gxx your best bet is the Intel T1350 (spec code SL99T) CPU, because 940Gxx only supports Single Core CPUs.
The 940Gxx has a 533MHz FSB.
If 945Gxx (like you have) you can go up to the T7600 CPU. 945Gxx supports a 667MHz (and sometimes higher) FSB.
The T5300 you got, has only 533MHz FSB, and hence will not work.

Re: Celeron in Thinkpad R60e can not upgrade???
I don't think any of the variant chips like the T5300 or T2450 will work. I have a R60e with a T5200, which would not post, but with a T7400, it worked fine.

Re: Celeron in Thinkpad R60e can not upgrade???
I believe Fred is correct. The T5300 wasn't used in any ThinkPads, AFAICT. (It was used in a Lenovo 3000 model.)
UPDATED INFO:
For a CPU to work in a ThinkPad, it has to be physically correct in size and pin-out (yes, it's socket M in this case) and the BIOS has to support it. Furthermore, R60e's came with two chipset variants. One had the 940GML chipset, the other the 945GM. The 940GML mobo has been reported to support only Celeron and Core Solo T1350 CPUs. The 945GM mobo supports the same CPUs as the R60/T60 including Core Duo and Core 2 Duo CPUs, like T2300, T2400, T5500, etc.
This is why there is conflicting info on R60e CPU upgrades - some DO support Core Duo upgrades and some DO NOT! Refer to the exact part number or machine type and compare to the information in the R60e Hardware Maintenance Model.
Note: All of the R60e models that were originally equipped with the Celeron CPU are shown as coming with the 940GML motherboard in the TABOOKs.

Re: Celeron in Thinkpad R60e can not upgrade???
Your chipset is in the 940Gxx group, so you can only upgrade to the single-core (a.k.a. Core Solo) CPU T1350 @ 533MHz
The e in R60e stands for economy, they only put the minimal specs in that laptop.
And you also cannot put it in a docking station (connectors missing in R60e).

Sorry guys, I had instal Coresolo T1300 and Boot! already, pls see my SSRealBlackStuff wrote:Your chipset is in the 940Gxx group, so you can only upgrade to the single-core (a.k.a. Core Solo) CPU T1350 @ 533MHz

any coreduo and core2duo will not work in my r60e cause I had T2300, T5300, T5500, all of that did not work:(underclocker wrote:I believe Fred is correct. The T5300 wasn't used in any ThinkPads, AFAICT. (It was used in a Lenovo 3000 model.)

The BIOS probably does not support that model. I would try any of the CPU's listed as supported for an R60 or T60, like T2300, T2400, T2500, T2600, T2700, T7200, T7400 or T7600. Also Core Solo's should work and they are very inexpensive, T1300 or T1400, but include speed step, 667MHz bus and nice cache size (2MB).
Let us know what happens.
I wonder why this my R60e not support coreduo and coe2duo
T1300 (1.66Ghz, 2MB L2cache, 667MhzFSB) compare with T2300 (1.66Ghz, 2MB L2Cache, 667MhzFSB) both of the was identical the different is only the core..
Thx all for your kind attention.

What's you machine type? That's interesting because the one I had worked fine with a T7400, but wouldn't boot with a T5200.

Re: Celeron in Thinkpad R60e can not upgrade???
Have you looked at the core speed of that installed T1300?
It's running way too slow at only 997.5MHz, and should be 1.66GHz.
The multiplier should be 14 instead of 6, when running at FSB=533 and Bus speed=133.
You need to install the T1350 instead, as I mentioned previously.

you're right..
is it any pin mod could fixed this? to gain the real speed to 1.66GHz
off course if there is possible to upgrade to coreduo or core2duo it would be great..
thx

Re: Celeron in Thinkpad R60e can not upgrade???
Those CPUs are so cheap ($6.- on eBay), it's probably not even worth trying.
Besides, I know nothing about pin modding, sorry.
And no, you can NOT upgrade to Core Duo or Core 2 Duo.

Bump
I just wanna fill in that a T7200 does not work, i had a spare so i tried it.
although a T1350 does work. Bought one for 12£ at ebay.
Not that big of performance increase, 200 more mhz and twice the cache.
But with speedstep it pretty much doubled my battery time
