Access Connections wireless settings and ICS

#1 Post by Icee » Thu Jul 01, 2010 9:32 am

Hello everyone!

I have a networking issue that I can't quite get straight in my head. I'm trying to make my x61t into a wireless router and share the usb air card connection securely to my other wifi devices. This would make my tablet into a crazy expensive and huge mifi unit, but its hardware I already have.

I was able to setup an ad-hoc connection with Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) and I was able to connect to my x61t. It was pretty easy. ICS likes using 192.168.0.1 as the address of the device that is sharing the main connection, so I used the same IP address when setting up the ad-hoc connection in Access Connections. The problem is the only type of encryption ad-hoc seems to support is WEP.

To increase security, I thought it would be better to use infrastructure mode and setup wep2-aes. The only issue I run into with Access Connections is that it tries to associate with a router even when I've assigned a static IP address to the profile. All I want to do is have the wifi card on the x61t act as the wifi access point and pass the traffic to ICS to hand out IP address to connecting devices.

Is this possible? Or am I trying to fit a square peg in a round hole?

Chris
