X40 frozen

Hello everybody,
Now I am having a new problem with this X40 (Win XP Pro).
For 3 days now, it has been in a strange state, frozen with just 2 green leds ON, and I have been unable to “awake” it.
I am not familiar with “hibernate”, “suspend” or “stand-by” states. I have never used them.
So here is a description of what happens when I try to turn on the X40, with both battery and AC power connected :
First it seems to start normally, during about one second I can hear the fan running fast, and I see five LEDs ON:
- Numlock LED green,
- Caps lock LED green,
- Drive in use LED green,
- Power on LED,
- Battery status LED orange,
- Standby status LED green.
I call this “state 1”.
Then, after this first second, the machine goes to what I call “state 2”, with only three LEDs ON:
- Drive in use LED green,
- Power on LED green,
- Battery status LED green.
All LEDs stay ON permanently, and the fan is now running slowly.
Then the X40 stays blocked in this state “forever”, and I don’t know what I could do to “awake” it.
I have tried to gain access to BIOS during startup (by depressing F1), it does not work.
Everything seems frozen.
Any idea?
Of course, I could just buy another laptop (X60 ?), but I like this machine, and I want to get it back to life.

Remove the hard drive and then try to get into BIOS.

Hello, Harry,
tried your advice (remove HDD), no change.
Then I went on, removing memory board. No change.
Finally put back memory board, turned on, Bingo! Boot to BIOS was now possible.
Then put everything back in place, and X40 works again.
Turns out that the cause of the problem was that the memory board was not properly inserted.

Good that you got it working. To display an inline image it does have to be hosted elsewhere. In addition, per the forum rules, the following applies;
