how well does the multi-touch screen work on the w510?

Is there some lag? And is it as precise as using a mouse?

It works very well. No lag, you can move the cursor just as fast as you want.

Slight disappointment is when pinching or enlarging the magnification does not change smoothly. It makes it somewhat difficult to zoom to the precise point you want.

I'm deciding between the multitouch and non multitouch as well. Very difficult to find good info.

Has anyone found a usable capacitive stylus? I understand it won't have pressure sensitivity or anything sophisticated, but being able to paint more naturally with photoshop brushes would be nice. Not sure if the screen is accurate enough for that.

Would anyone with the multitouch screen mind doing a test for me? I'm curious about using MOI:

Designed for a tablet but it seems like a finger would work. There's a free trial if someone could try it out and report back (you may need to adjust the interface size)

Deal hunting is frustrating as well. The educational discount my school offers is pretty weak - the standard coupons are better. My last thinkpad (T41p) I bought through a friend's EPP discount, which was pretty good (he doesn't work there anymore). Does Lenovo still encourage employees to share their discounts (and does anyone want to help a broke student)?

I've had the touchscreen W510 and decided it effected the displlay too much for use in things like photoshop.
It seems to require a fine mesh over the surface of the screen which makes the screen a little darker and a little less clear. It certainly is not accurate enough for touch with photoshop.

I'm really happy with the non touch screen and love the display.
It's lighter, a little thinner and users less battery power too.

I won't be using it for graphic work but audio production, so the lesser display quality isn't that much of a problem or is it a lot worse?
Also how many touch points does it recognize?

Really it's all about prospective ... given that I now have non touch and I have seen both ... even for basic word processing / email etc I MUCH prefer the non touch screen.

The touch screen itself seems to be comprised of a couple of thing 1) a fine stocking mesh over the entire area and 2) grid point that if the ambient light reflects a certain way you can see them ... I think they were about 10mm apart not sure if that defines the number of touch points.

I have the FHD multi-touch screen and I agree that pinching to zoom is a little irregular. But the resolution is fantastic! I have not seen the non touch screen to compare (and maybe I don't want to). It is nice to touch the screen once in a while when doing Powerpoints in class--I like resting my arm on the desk next to the Thinkpad, putting my fingers behind the screen, and scrolling with my thumb. Very relaxing and it's always good to change it up as much as possible when you're using computers to avoid over-use injuries.

Would they be capable of touch based usage... ?

Once you get used to the touch screen it becomes quite handy. I agree with others that it may lack the accuracy to use in Photoshop detail but it is great, to me, to be able to reach up and just scroll with such ease and accuracy that I would order it again. As far as it taking away from the quality of the screen image, I have used both and the effect is small for the convenience of touch.

I have several customers who take great joy in touching the screen and panning around their floor plan in AutoCad

What is good is that YOU HAVE A CHOICE.
