#1 Post by naro » Sun Mar 06, 2005 12:29 pm

hi all,

has anyone changed their hdd to a higher capacity ones for their T42s??

mine is only a 40gb and i want to upgrade it to a 80gb or 100gb ones when i go back to Singapore for my summer holidays.

b'cos of the anti-shock thingy for T42, is it possible to change the hdd by oneself without damaging the anti-shock protection for the hdd???

thanks..

Yes, you can change the hard drive. Very simple to do, and the Anti Shock software will work with the new drive. You would be best to get the recovery CD's for your T42 from IBM (or, in the case of the T42, I think you can make them yourself). Then just re-image the new drive. A number of us (myself included) have upgraded our T's to the fast 7200 rpm drive quite successfully. ... JD Hurst

it easy to do

#8 Post by grpeto » Sun Mar 06, 2005 5:57 pm

Hello,

Two weeks ago I bought a new 80Gb hard disk drive. A western Digital unit with 8Mb of buffer..
http://www.wdc.com/sp/products/Products.asp?DriveID=102
The Operation was clean and easy. An now I have installed Windows (first 40GB) and fedora linux (last 40Gb).
Booting with a linux live cd, I was able to clone Windows partition from the original hd. So I have installed the original windows and all the utilities that came with it and I haven't detect any trouble with the new unit.

in my website you can find a easy way to clone your hd.

Sorry for my poor english.

I just switched from a 40Gb to 80Gb drive on my T41. Since everything was working fine, I just used Acronis TrueImage to image the old drive over to the new in an external enclosure ($15 from tigerdirect.com), and then switched the drives. Very easy, no problems at all. Better than starting over, if all your software and files are in place and functional. At the same time I dumped the hidden partition and recovered that space--I still can't figure out what the advantage of the hidden partition recovery is, anyway.

I dumped the hidden partition also.
I think the reason for someone to have it would be, for example:
They are a travelling businessperson, who does not want to travel with recovery CD, etc. and who has a disaster while on the road. That kind of person could get back up and running with just the hidden partition.
If you are not on the road, and are seldom separated from your CD's, I don't think there is a huge reason to keep the hidden partition.
That's my take on it, anyhow,

Aamsel, if I was "back and running" without the software I've added to what the computer came with, I'd definitely not be back and running. :-) That's why I dumped the hidden partition. I guess the partition is OK for someone who never does anything at all with his computer except surf the web, though.

Don't have to convince me.
I deleted my hidden partition.
I am only guessing that a "buisiness-type" who travels a lot would want to have it for recovery on the road.

Cloning the Hidden partition.

#15 Post by globenet » Mon Mar 07, 2005 12:45 am

Hi,

I've a T41 23723HU and was successful in migrating from the orginal 40g HDD to the 60. However, I was unable to move the predesktop or hidden partition over with the recovery disks

Please advise how this could be done.

Thanks
Regards

Hmm, since we're on the topic of removing/replacing/upgrading the HDD... has anyone ever had difficulty removing the HDD from their TP? The screw is so tightly screwed in that I can't remove it (i've tried but I don't want the strip the screw head, have a little already though). Any suggestions? Darn screw won't budge.

get a phillips screwdriver that fits and turn it.. :)

you won't strip the threads but you could strip the phillips slot..

it will also take a flat blade screwdriver..

just turn your thinkpad off, close it, turn it over, hold the screwdriver in place firmly and turn the screw out..

then open the lid a bit and pull the drive out..
you will need to be careful if the drive does not slide out easily in that when it does release you don't want to lose control and dropn one its out..

Tried that already. As for the phillips slot, that's what I meant when I said screw head. I think I've been at the Home Depot too much. :) [censored] hardware section, too many sizes and styles of bolts, screws, nails, etc. I will try again with the HDD. Now that I think about it, the center screw for the keyboard is really REALLY stiff too. Took me about half an hour last time to remove it (wanted to clean out the dust and stuff inbetween the board and the keyboard assembly.

there is a new type of phillips screwdriver tip..
it has serrations at the tip which grab the inside of the phillips screw "slot" and prevent it from riding up and out of the "slot"..

Bill, do you have a part number for the screwdriver, do you know where to get it? Also, what is the size of the allen wrench for the ibm allen screw?

Thanks...

not sure of the size of the allen, but I believe Bill is speaking generally about a new type of phillips screwdriver tip, not an IBM Part #.....
