Just got my new x201 - 5-in-1 Card Reader?

#1 Post by AHMIowa » Tue Jul 06, 2010 9:51 pm

Greetings - I feel very dumb asking this - but I just received my new x201, which I ordered with the 5-in-1 adapter. Somehow I visualized that it would be on the side in place of the ExpressCard slot (which I haven't ever used since my T43).

New unit does indeed have an ExpressCard slot.

Pulled down the service manual, and see that the "5-in-1" media reader is on the front edge. I've got it working with SD/SDHC cards, but when I try to use a Memory Stick Pro, it doesn't "hook in" to anything, and just disappears into the abyss, and I had to fish it out with tweezers.

Could something be missing, or what? unfortunately, I only have one MemStickPro, and have both Sony (MemStickPro) and SD digital cameras, so I thought I'd be able to get away without an adapter with this system.

OK, what am I missing?? :?

Cheers!

Note, that other than this minor quandary, I'm very pleased with the performance and the battery life (over 7 hrs with 6-cell) of the x201. Not quite as sleek as the x301 I've been using at work, but this one is on my nickel, and I don't want to strech the $$ that far, especially on a unit apparently at EOL.

I just got my X201 today (7/6). I couldn't be happier with it. Specs are in my signature below.

As for the card reader, I only use SD/SDHC cards. Do the specs for the reader show that it is supposed to take the kind of card you're trying to use? Could your specific card be proprietary and need a Sony card reader or laptop? (Sony is known to do stuff like that sometimes.) Another option: get a USB memory card reader/adapter. They're pretty cheap. I got one for about $8.00. Card goes in one end, the other end is a standard USB connector. My adapter only takes SD/SDHC cards though. But I know they have them for other types of memory cards.

3 letters! What you have is a Memory Stick Pro DUO, and for that you need the following adapter:

Memory Stick DUO? Well, I guess we learn something new every day... but that's too bad - i was really hoping to be able to avoid carrying any kind of adapter for the two cameras.

Thanks, EOMtp, for the pointer to the ebay listings, too!

Cheers, and I suppose I'll enjoy my x201 anyway...

You don't have to "carry" the adapter above. The adapter can be inserted into the SD slot of the X201 and left there permanently, with nothing sticking out, converting the aperture of the opening to that needed by the Memory Stick Duo.
