w510 Dual Channel memory not supported?
w510 Dual Channel memory not supported?
I just ran CPU-Z and it indicated that I had ram in slots 1 and 3 and that my memory was running in single channel mode. I did a quick run through crucial.com looking for memory and it stated that the w510 did not support dual channel memory. I know that's not the best indicator but is that true? Do w510 only support single channel?
Sorry if this was asked before I did a search and couldn't find anything.

Re: w510 Dual Channel memory not supported?
The W510 is dual channel capable. Try moving the DIMM in slot 3 to slot 2.

Re: w510 Dual Channel memory not supported?
Thanks for the info. I moved the stick from Slot 3 to Slot 2 and still no dice. CPU-Z still reports that I'm running in single channel mode. I have a stick in Slot 1 and a stick in Slot 2.

Re: w510 Dual Channel memory not supported?
This may be an issue with CPU-Z. It would be interesting for another W510 owner to run it.
Re: w510 Dual Channel memory not supported?
Hi,
it definitely supports dual channel. Mine came with 2x 2Gig installed. Both dimms in the internal slots.
This will not be in dual channel. I installed one of the 2Gig in one of the outside slots and then CPU-z showed the dual channel mode.
Just on a side note, I had 2 older crucial 4Gig sticks and they crash the system when run in dual channel. In single channel mode they run fine.
I sent them back for replacement.

Re: w510 Dual Channel memory not supported?
I checked this under Everest as well and my memory was only running in single channel. I went out and bought another 4GB (2x2) of RAM and put that in the two empty slots for a total of 8GB and now it's running in dual channel.
CPU-Z reports the following:
Slot 1: This is the bottom most slot under the keyboard.
Slot 2: This is the slot on the left when the computer is upside down and the screen hinge facing away from you.
Slot 3: This is the top most slot under the keyboard.
Slot 4: This is the slot on the right when the computer is upside down and the screen hinge is facing away from you.
Everest Motherboard > SPD labels these as DIMM(1,2,3,4) and the physical location is the same as CPU-Z.
Everest Chipset > Northbridge
DRAM Slot#1 corresponds to Slot 1/DIMM 1 (Under keyboard)
DRAM Slot#2 corresponds to Slot 3/DIMM 3 (Under keyboard0
DRAM Slot#3 corresponds to Slot 2/DIMM 2 (bottom of laptop)
DRAM Slot#4 corresponds to Slot 4/DIMM 4 (bottom of laptop)
I have no idea why the northbridge labels the memory slots differently.
My WEI Memory score jumped from a 5.5(!!!!) to a 7.3 with the addition of the memory and I believe in part because the memory is running in dual channel mode now. I wonder if anyone else with a w5xx or w7xx has this issue. I also wonder why, out of the box, it was running in single channel mode.

Re: w510 Dual Channel memory not supported?
Yeah I tried that as well and it didn't work. Perhaps I didn't seat the RAM properly. It works now but I don't think it should be necessary to fiddle around with a brand new laptop to get it to run as advertised.freakwave wrote:it definitely supports dual channel.
