Hi,
I just swapped out my HSF and today my system died. When I was using it, heard a pop and my laptop no longer recognized it was plugged in. I thought it was my power brick(died last year in Afghanistan) but I swapped out to 2 other bricks and neither worked. I tried the 10 press static discharge and no difference. I opened the keyboard and palmrest and looked for shorts and burnt components but found nothing.
I plugged in the power supply and this time heard the pop again then saw a spark in the yellow connector piece inside the system. With a battery plugged in the system boots. Is it possible to just replace that piece or do I have to replace more? I can't afford to take it to service and sans laptop I am dead. looking at the inside of the male connector I see burn marks.
Can someone tell me the p/n of the yellow piece? Is replacing that enough or do I also need a new system board? Thanks
- sent from my Nokia phone....
Help with dead T61
Re: Help with dead T61
Minimally I am guessing that you blew a fuse on the board and that you need a new DC jack and a replacement fuse. Worst case is the power circuitry on the board is blown and you need a new systemboard. The jack can be readily found on EBay. You'll need to remove the systemboard to replace the jack, so that would be a good time to check fuses with a multimeter. The fuses themselves can be found online at electronic component outfits like Mouser.

Here are the maintenance manuals for the systemboard removal. Which one to choose depends on your machine;

Thanks, you are a fount of information. I tracked down the issue. When I had swapped the HSF I apparently pinched the red power wire. It shorted against the heat sink and so no power. I'm surprised it didn't fry the board. When I took out the HSF I could see the wire was exposed and there was a bit of a burn. Yikes. Anyways, a bit of electrical tape and another session cleaning the thermal paste and I'm back my system (as I type this). I'll probably swap out the fuse and jack in the future. Thanks for your help. Definitely makes me a bit more tentative to do the FrankenPad.
Thanks again.
