What does IPS mean?

#1 Post by CoolDragon » Sun Mar 06, 2005 7:18 pm

By adding options to T42p 2373GVU, I noticed this line:

14.1 inch SXGA+ IPS (1400x1050) TFT Display with wide viewing angle and high density display (Standard)

What does this IPS mean? I know only 15'' screens with 1400x1050 and higher resolution is Flexview, so what is this?
Current: T43P-2687D5U: P-M 2G, 2G RAM, FireGL V3200 128M, 80G 5400 RPM(Will be 100G 7K100 when 2010 gone!), 15' UXGA, Multi Burner, Intel A/B/G, Bluetooth, 9 Cell, Fingerprint Reader, WinXP Pro

Unless the specs have changed (doubtful), it's most likely a typo. IPS is the technology that IBM calls "Flexview" and is currently only available for the 15" thinkpads.
IBM ThinkPad T42p (2373-7XU): 1.8GHz/1024MB, 15" UXGA, DVD-RW, 80GB, 2200b/g.
T42 (2374-3VU): 1.7GHz/512MB, 14.1"SXGA+, DVD-RW, 80GB, 2200b/g.

IPS stands for In-Plane-Switching. For more details and advantages of this technology, check out this article:

I agree, probably a typo, but Boe Hydis, who IBM are now sourcing LCDs from, make a 14.1" SXGA+ panel with something called AFFS which seems to be similar to (they say better than) IPS. This panel does draw more power than their regular 14.1" SXGA+ though.

They have a fancy flash demo explaining it all:

Hi cooldragon

When I go to "Add Options", I get the specifications for the screen as you mentioned. However, if you click the link under "Description/Manufacturer/Product Code", which reads "T42p Intel...", I get th e following for the display:

Display 14.1" TFT active matrix SXGA+ (1400 x 1050) - 24-bit (16.7 million colors)

I think that the latter is the correct specification. Suggest that you contact IBM for a clarification.

Yes, I do hope they start offering Hydis LCD panels. Hydis makes great panels. Also, compared to IPS panels AFFS ones use 20-30% less power. But compared to "normal" TN+ panels it does use more. I say "normal" as TN+ is what 90%+ of LCDs are.

None of the current thinkpads :( , but the possibility may exist for a 14.1" thinkpad with this IPS-like panel.

HYDIS AFFS

#9 Post by rssb » Wed Mar 09, 2005 7:57 pm

The current HYDIS 14.1" SXGA LCDS which are used might not contain the AFFS technology

they are mostly HT14P12 , which has a contrast ratio of 200:1 when compared to samsung one's which have 350:1. Has some view angles less than 45 degrees, where has samsung has all 45's

The newer part which has the AFFS technology is HT14P21, which has a contrast ratio of 600:1, and angles upto 90 degrees seems to be still not under mass production. The production notes say 1H'05 , may be after the first half we might see these, but cannot be sure if IBM will incorporate them, considering the price difference these two parts might have .

Oh, looks like you are from IBM! That's good to know.

But who knows what will happen after Lenovo bought the PC division of IBM.

Nah ! I am not from IBM ... I am also simple end user, but have spent some time researching the difference between them. I called up HYDIS to ask about the product earlier, and they told me about both the parts and the same thing is posted on thier website also.
