Norton 2004 is driving me nuts!

#1 Post by 1885 » Sun Mar 06, 2005 10:18 pm

I've had my T42 for a couple of weeks and have had more Norton crashes for different reasons than I can count. I don't know how many times I've uninstalled and reinstalled Norton...what a pain. I've followed Symantics instructions each and every time to the letter and it works for a couple of days and then crashes without warning. Anyone have any ideas before I scrap Norton and go to another anti-virus program?

As you say, right at the end: "scrap Norton and go to another anti-virus program". I like AVG, and it's free, too. Avast is good, and free, as well.

+1. Dumped Norton when they wanted more money. AVG is fine, way less of a system hog. Vast improvement in speed on boot and un-suspension.

I think I'm inclined to agree with both of you. I used Norton many years ago and remember having compatibility problems then. Think I'll look at some others.

I dumped Norton as soon as I got my machine. I like Symantec Corporate a lot from my workplace although it has missed things in the past. I run TrendMicro house call from time to time as a backup (it catches all sorts of things the others don't).

Kev, I'm using Trend PC-Cillin on my desktop and like it. I may just opt for another license and use it on the laptop, too.

I highly recommend AVG antivirus. Its free and extremely reliable, fast, and effective. I use it on all my computers and have been extremely satisfied.

I use Sophos A.V. 3.91. It's a great product.

The first think I did to my T42 was scrap Norton and instal Sophos.

I've pretty much given up on SystemWorks. One of the problems with Norton programs, besides being massive and slow is that you can't uninstall them. Norton will always manage to leave crap behind. I've been using Microsoft's Cleanup and Defragmenter from the Accessories folder, which works great for the basic chores. I just downloaded a program called TuneUp Utilities and that keeps the Registry in order. I still use Norton AntiSpam to remove spam and Internet ads. Between those programs, I pretty much have all the bases covered without SystemWorks slowing me down.

I do like AVG but just recently switched to NOD32 and couldn't be happier. Only $39 to license and has gotten rave reviews both online and from people I know who use it. Very small footprint also.

If you want ultimate security but with relibaility and small resource usage, go with my set-up:

nod32 - excellant AV, its light and extremely powerful.
outpost pro 2.5 - easy to use light and powerful firewall with included pop-up blockers etc.
ewido security suite - a dedicated trojan hunter (as well as other malicious malware), light and easy to use.
diamond CS's Process Guard - essentially a sand box (it stops unknown processes from executing), v.easy to configure.

This combined with spybot, adaware and syware blaster will keep any system clean and running smoothly. All the above work really well with each other also. as for free firewalls and AVs, i recommend the following in order of how how well they acheive the combination of reliability and protection:

AVs:

AntiVir
Avast
AVG

Firewalls:

Zonealarm - an excellant piece of software!
Kerio
Sygate

Hope this helps!

I would also add CWShredder and Pest Patrol for spyware, both catch things the others don't.

I guess I'm going to be a real oddball now, cuz I love NAV2004.

I had it on my works Dell lappy, and on my own main PC, and Ive just put it on my T22, all running sweetly, not too much overhead, and always catches the crap.

Sorry guys, I can't fault it :!:
