Identify this part - T30 copper

#1 Post by XonOFF » Wed Jul 14, 2010 7:29 pm

I fixed my T30 which had a dead MB with a replacement from eBay.

BUT, when I took the keyboard bezel off the existing base, I found this piece laying in the bottom (didn't hear or feel it come off) of the base, just about under the ScrLK key area.

The "new" base had no similar part that I could find, and I could not find any place which seemed to accept it. So, don't know what to do.

Anyone know what this part is? And, more importantly, where it goes?

It appears to me to be a grounding path from the top side of the keyboard bezel (to the UltraBay cage?) to the bottom level of the base, perhaps to the MB itself. It's about 1.25" long with a 1/2" offset.

The unusual rubber knob with a flat side should make it recognizable if anyone's ever seen it before.

Thanks for any help here.

I'm not intimately familiar with T30's, but it looks like it could be the mechanism that depresses the suspend switch on the motherboard when the LCD is closed. If so, the black section would be the only visible part at the top of the keyboard bezel.

If your machine no longer suspends when you close the lid, that's probably it.

That's my guess. Good luck.

THANKS!
You are absolutely correct.
Turns out, the 'new' bezel cover did have one in place that I didn't find earlier. I used my old bezel, however since it has a TouchPad while the 'new' did not.

IAC, I can see it fits right where you suggest.

Really, thanks again.

Underclocker is spot-on!
If you turn the keyboard-bezel/palmrest over, with the palmrest part nearest you, this part goes from the top left-to-right, just above the left half of the metal CD-cover. The sticking-out/up part (on the right on your picture) sits in the black plastic extension in about the middle of the CD-cover.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

Ya'll are right.

I took the thing apart and put it in. Fit right on the posts as it should.

Put it all back together and the first time I closed the lid, it disappeared again. Thinking I just didn't notice it not seated properly, I took it all apart again and set the part, put it all back together. Checked to be sure it was in place, it was. Then, the first time I closed it and reopened, it was pushed out of place again.

So, went back to the 'new' base and took the bezel off to see if there is supposed to be a pad or something backing it up. That's when I saw that the two plastic case posts are 'rivited' over the copper to hold it in place.

Apparently, the posts on my original bezel had popped off to release this clip. So, now I know I have to glue that thing down to fix it in place. That means it's coming apart one more time.

Anyway, now I'm wondering if that thing caused my original problem, shorting out the MB in some way flying around loose inside. Or, perhaps even holding it in perpetual suspension as the reason I didn't get a POST or BIOS screen.

So, I'll not be using it until I get the glue deal done, but I'm not taking it apart again tonight!

Thanks all for the help.
