T40p fan doesn't stop

#1 Post by Silencer » Mon Mar 07, 2005 5:18 am

I have strange problem which I'm not sure is a problem at all, so I have to ask if anyone has similar.

When I turn on my T40p it's alsmost silent, cooler fan is off, only HDD is working. MobileMeter shows temperature around 42 degrees C on 600MHz in Adaptive mode. Then I switch to 1600MHz to get some performance, cooler starts working in slow speed with 45 degrees in MoileMeter.

But when I switch to 600MHz again cooler doesn't stop at all and continue working even when temperature is 38 degrees. I'm not sure and already want to go to IBM service centre, but still, maybe it's supposed to be like that?

I think it should stop.

Before making any other conclusions, please provide the BIOS version, perhaps, if you're not running the latest, updating may help.

The problem description is for an R50p but the T4x and R5x series use the same kinds of system boards.

My T40's fan however also runs constantly and does not stop after 5-6 minutes. In most of the environments I work in this is not a problem, but in a silent room, the ticking of the fan is pretty irritatitng.

BIOS is 3.13. I've searched this forum about fan issue and it turns out it's a common problem. T4x fans are working all the time, which is pretty mush dissappointing :(

What's the percentage of CPU usage when the fan's going?

It's basically idle, 5 percent max on 600MHz.

Ditto, and a real annoyance

I have this issue also.
Mobilemeter shows temps in the mid 40s, the HDD area is cool to the touch and I'm not doing graphics. Once it spins up, the fan continues at medium, noisy speed rather than slow and silent. This a "Thinkpad" not a "Gamepad" so one would expect silence.
T40p, BIOS 3.12, 60-7200 drive, 768 MB. II don't plan to use 3.13 as posts on the net don't show that it fixes this issue on the T series.

Any tested solutions out there???
