T60 no indication of power

#1 Post by microsnakey » Sat Jul 17, 2010 7:29 pm

I posted a while back about a T60 I found
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=88254

Well I got a 3rd party power adapter on ebay and it doesnt show any signs of power, no LED's turn on to indicate that the charger's plugged in.

I think its dead, any suggestions why it will not charge/turn on

Are you still trying to use PC2-4200? I don't recall ever having tried that or having seen it tried. The T60 takes PC2-5300 so you're into some unknown territory there. As a test, remove the RAM and power up. Does the machine beep? Do you have access to a multimeter? Measure 20Vdc between the center pin and shell at the (Thinkpad) end of the cord on the AC adapter.

The thing is that it doesn't power up, they is no LED's indicating that the ac adapter is in or that it is charging and no beeps.
I have multimetered the ac adapter before but I will do it again in the way you say

Have you tried powering on without the battery installed? Also have you tried the 3 finger salute? Remove the battery and main power. Hold down the power button repeatedly for 10 repetitions, and hold it down for 30 seconds on the last repetition. Release the button. Now plug in AC power only and try to power up.

Remove the board and check fuses and/or replace the systemboard.
