DCC on 600E

#1 Post by bhanscom » Mon Mar 07, 2005 1:04 pm

I have been trying to use DCC (Direct Cable Connect) from this machine to two different desktop machines - one running 98SE (like the 600E) and the other running XP. In both cases I am able to connect using the serial port at no more than 19200 baud. (At least that is what XP tells me the connect spped is - In reality I think it is more like 300 baud as it took me an hour to transfer a one meg file!). When I try to use the parallel port the DCC software shows the correct port (LPT1: and also a "phantom" port LPT3:) When I try to connect I get a "Port not available" error for either port.

Throw a $5 10/100 NIC in the PC Card port and quit shooting yourself in the foot!

James,

As a matter of fact I did pick up a NIC card yesterday as well as a PCMCIA - CF adapter. But neither satisfiers my need to understand why this does not work any better than it does. We have at least six brands of laptop computers and the Thinkpads are the only ones that exibit very strange behaviour when it comes to their ports. For example we bought 6 refurbished 600E's. All had WIN 98SE installed and all showed a COM1 and LPT1. They were plugged into various peripheral devices and in so doing they changed the locations of their ports i.e. COM1 became COM4 or COM5 for no apparent reason. In fact I connected a new Lexmark printer to one of them on the parallel port and after doing so the COM port had changed from 1 to 5!

I have never seen such bizarre behaviour from ANY computer!

If you read my other post regarding the USB problem on this machine you may understand my frustration. It would appear that no one on this site has any ideas about it, nor suggestions of how to fix it. A consensus from my local gurus is to re-install Windows. Unfortunately I needed to get the data off first (which I can now do with the PCMCIA devices) - but it still bugs me why this stuff is happening!

BTW I don't have any of the original IBM discs, so I am going to use a generic Windows 98SE OEM disc. Do you forsee any problems in doing this?

Brad

Brad,

By default, the 600 series all have the COM1 dedicated to the IR port. You can turn it off in the BIOS.

AFA the LPT1 problems, what do you have the port set for WRT EPP, etc.?

Welcome to the world of 600s and W98!

Get whatever drivers you need for your clean W98 install form the IBM website.
