Fn, Windows key & 'up' 'left' directions keys not working

#1 Post by gibbs7 » Mon Jul 19, 2010 12:43 am

Hello, hope all is well with everyone.

Before I go and uninstall drivers and mess with the bios I thought it might be prudent to see if anyone has had a similar issue (although nothing turned up in my search). I'm running an x60s with an upgrade to windows 7 about 5 months ago. Initially all was fine and no issues. Then the windows key stopped working, followed by the direction keys mentioned. My drivers are all up to date, and I've never had an issue like this before (especially with the windows key...just odd). I can't remember changing any settings that would cause the issue, it just happened out of the blue. Could my keyboard be going?

The issues aren't fatal, but very annoying. Please any direction in solving the problem would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

It could be something as simple as a loose keyboard connector. In order to get to it, you have to remove four screws from the bottom of the system, push the keyboard toward the back edge and lift up. There's complete instructions on how to remove this and other components from your laptop in the Hardware Maintenance Manual:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-62866

Page 65 (printed in the document; or page 71 of the .PDF file) has the section on the keyboard. Once you have lifted the keyboard out of the way, remove the connector and then re-install it. See if that helps.

You can also download a diagnostic program which can check the functionality of the keys. PC Doctor for DOS should have a test under the Interactive menu:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-56222

This is a program, which when executed on your computer, creates an .ISO file. You then need a program which is able to burn this "image" file onto a CD; you can't simply write the file to a blank disk. CDBurnerXP is one such (free) program:
