Ubuntu 10.04 on t43
Ubuntu 10.04 on t43
Hi everyone,
I was thinking about picking up a t43 on eBay with the intention of sticking Ubuntu 10.04 or Linux Mint 9 on it. I was wondering if any of you had done it, and whether you found it a reasonably painless process? I have been hearing that there were problems with the ATI graphics cards, so I was interested to hear in other people's experiences. Would you guys recommend it?

Not all T43s have ATI graphics. My T43 has Intel graphics and Ubuntu 10.4 works like a dream on it.

also:
You can run it from the live CD. That's a good way to check compatibility without installing

Re: Ubuntu 10.04 on t43
Although I'm sure I want to stick with Windows as my primary OS (almost all my apps are Windows based, some are Mac OS X based), I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my T43 via Wubi.
Regarding the ATI X300 video card, it works great as far as I can tell. Full hardware-accelerated Desktop, including the "wobbly" windows.
Although it is mostly worthless (and may be gone some day), I started an "Ubuntu on T43" mini-guide:
http://xenomorph.net/misc/guides/ubuntu-t43/
Ubuntu 10.04 supports most of the stuff on the ThinkPad T43. 3D acceleration, WiFi (2915ABG), 2-finger scrolling, middle-clicking, etc.
I had to add a command to /etc/rc.local to get the volume buttons working.

Cool guys, thanks. It's hard to tell whether for most people it's a smooth installation or not when you are just browsing problems on the support forums! I shall get myself a t43 then (and then blame you lot if it doesn't work
)

Re: Ubuntu 10.04 on t43
I'm getting this topic again.. What's your flash speed on T43/T43p in Ubuntu Linux? For example YouTube, 720p, fullscreen? I've some lagging also with 480p and fullscreen in certain videos. Some tuning of Flash's settings possible?
edit: using Windows 7 and Chrome browser, no lagging with 720p and fullscreen.

Re: Ubuntu 10.04 on t43
This post brought to you by Ubuntu 10.10 running on my T43. I have the ATI X300 video card and Linux works just fine. All my compiz features work like a charm. The machine boots very quickly and is very responsive in general.
I hooked up a 24" LCD to my T43 and while I had some minor issues getting the correct resolution to work (1920x1080 or something) it did work. Only took a few minutes of work and then I was golden. I had my internal LCD handling the basics while the external LCD handled my vm's, firefox and so on.gabtan wrote:i have 2 t43s, one with ati, and one with intel. both work great ootb with ubuntu 10.04. one problem, though: i can not use external monitor, it is a bug. lot of people complained about this, but no solution yet.

Re: Ubuntu 10.04 on t43
Hi all,
I have a T43 with ATI graphic card. I installed Ubuntu 10.10. Everything seems fine but when I am doing development with Ogre3d, I have frequent screen freezes and I have to force shut down the machine. Do you have any idea how to solve this problem?
Thanks!

Re: Ubuntu 10.04 on t43
If an Linux OS provides computer freezing, then it may indicate a real problem with hardware.
