T42p Question on Wireless On/Off
T42p Question on Wireless On/Off
Hi, I am fresh and still bleeding to this forum and the whole IBM world, and although I love my new T42p I have two questions:
1. In the beginning (notebook is a week old) I was able to control Bluetooth and Wireless On/Off thru the Fn/F5 Key Combo. After setting up a Network with my girlfriends notebook (using a crossover cable) the option for Wireless in no more shown in that fancy black menu. Anybody gotta way to make it show up again? It's turned on 24/7 and I don't even use WiFi at home...
2. I know this sounds whack, but where the [censored] is the infrared sensor? Not that I need it, I was just curious, since it shows up in my Hardware specs, but... I can't really find it looking at my Thinkpad. Is is that gizmo on the back of the screen?
Aight, thanks for any and all answers.

front left edge
On my t41p, the infrared port is on the front left edge of the machine. Put another way, it is under my left wrist, facing toward my left elbow. I think there is only one IR port on these machines, so there is not a second port on the back or the side.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Hi Leon
The Menu comes up, but all it shows is the options for Bluetooth. And during the first few days it used to show the options for Wireless LAN in that same menu, too. In other words, I could in fact turn the Wireless LAN off, which I can't now.
For the other answers: Haha, I found it! Thanks guys. It almost feels like someone came in just now and put it there. I mean, I am an Industrial Designer, I pay close attention to things. Hmm, maybe I am a BAD Industrial Designer, haha.

Well, it supposedly has:
802.11 b/g wireless (MPCI)
I don't know so much about Wireless, since I am using Broadband or Dialup for internet only. But, you know, from the price I payed it has to be cream of the crops. Really, there has to be a driver update or something for this. In the end it's just Windope XP that has to be configured, right?

Your wireless issue is a driver/application issue.
The best way to fix it is to un-install both the wifi NIC and the bluetooth NIC from device manager and also un-install the IBM tool set.
Once everything is off the machine start by updateing both drivers to the latest revs and then install the latest IBM tool software.
There are a couple threads on this topic on the old board if you feel like a bit of searching.

The correct way to fix this is to download and resintall the correct hot key drivers from the internet. Changing the drivers for the devices won't update the overlays, and will still leave you with a blank F5 menu.
