Integrated Mobile Broadband - Upgradeable vs. Gobi 2000

#1 Post by s2kdriver80 » Tue Jul 20, 2010 11:25 pm

When I ordered my T410s, I chose the "upgradeable" option. What does that exactly mean? Does this mean that I have all the hardware already pre-installed, and I just need a SIM card and a service plan? I noticed what appears to be a SIM card slot underneath the battery. Should have thought ahead when I ordered the ThinkPad and had them set it up ready to go from the beginning. Thanks.

It means you have the SIM card holder and the antennas, but you do NOT have the Gobi 2000 card itself, nor any other WWAN card, i.e., you have to add the WWAN card.

Thanks! It looks like there are two versions of the Gobi 2000 card for the Thinkpad - AT&T (US) version and the worldwide version. I've heard that both are unlocked and that the only difference between the two models is that the former comes with an unactivated AT&T SIM card and AT&T software. Otherwise they are identical in every way. Do you know if this is true?

I don't know if this were the case a few years ago, but looking at the hardware specs, both versions of the Gobi 2000 look the same. Also, the fact that you can only select Gobi 2000 or nothing during ThinkPad configuration online might imply and support what I said. I have a feeling ThinkPads that are configured with the Gobi card have the AT&T (USA) version (by title only - I think they threw the "AT&T" verbiage in there to indicate that it comes with an AT&T SIM). When you insert the SIM, it looks for GSM/HSDPA and when you take the SIM out, it becomes a CDMA/EVDO device.
