T60p WSXGA+ LCD driver failure - I think?

#1 Post by jhh » Wed Jul 21, 2010 8:01 pm

Hi Thinkpad guys! I've been lurking about since I picked up a X100e as a travel laptop a few weeks ago, and I wish my first post here would bear better news, but...

I ordered a T60p (WSXGA+/1680x1050) off of eBay (I didn't notice the Marketplace forum here - oops!), and on first powering it up, the bottom third of the screen shows horizontal rolling lines, even in the BIOS (ie; this is not an OS issue). Following instructions found on another thread here, I pressed on the back of the display and it went back to normal. Edit: I also dismantled much of it and reseated several thing. So far I haven't been able to replicate the wavy lines issue (then again I haven't tried very hard), but should I consider this a terminal case and return it to the seller, or just hope for the best?

If I keep it, are the screens ridiculously expensive to replace? It's in rather nice shape and I've been wanting something to replace my godawful Macbook Pro with, and I kinda like it.

Also it appears to have a FDE drive in it. From what I've read from other sources, these are interchangeable - how badly does it affect performance, and are there any gotchas to swapping the default 100GB one out for a larger one?

I would return it to the seller. You are probably out of warranty and risk having the problem return. I love the T60p series and you should find one that is perfect.

Thanks for the advice - they packed the thing with the AC adapter on top of the display with no padding between the two, which is probably what happened to it. I'll use the Marketplace this time around as soon as they refund me.
