R40e LCD Panel transplant to an R50e

#1 Post by dejakenth » Thu Jul 22, 2010 4:56 am

Hi,

Am not really that good at extracting LCD panels from laptops, so before I ruin the potential donor laptops (r40e), I just wanted to ask if anyone here has successfully transplanted an R40e LCD to an R50e. The Lenovo website states that all units have 14.1" XGA screens.

Since the r40e and r50e have different LCD assemblies I guess the LCD panel itself must be extracted first before I can transfer them. The video/lcd cables of the r40e and r50e differ so the LCD panel from the R40e must be able to work with the R50e lcd cable.

Potential LCD panel donor units are:
- r40e 2684-AA9
- r40e 2684-JA1

Target R50e is a 1834-TA4 unit.

Do any of the r40e LCD panels have a chance of being transplanted to the r50e?

Thanks in advance.

My info says 15" XGA panels can be swapped between R40/R51e/A31/G40
So IMHO it should also be possible for 14" XGA panels.
For SXGA+ I honestly don't know, you'd need to try.

If/when you do this, please report back with the Manufacturer's name (Hitachi/Samsung/LG Philips etc.) and part/model numbers, and the corresponding IBM P/N or FRU numbers.
This will be handy for other forum members.

It seems I need to do some more research on my donor and target units. Need to take out a measuring tape as well to make sure I get the LCD screen sizes right. It seems the r40e units have 20pin LCD connectors while the R50e utilizes a 30pin LCD connector.

Will update the post again when I get the chance to open up the units.

I'd appreciate if anyone has worked with the following Thinkpad units and can confirm how many pins they utilize for the lcd:

R40e M/T 2684 AA9 and 2684 JA1
R50e M/T 1834 TA4

TIA.

There are 13", 14" and 15" LCDs for this model.
As I said, my info is valid for 15" models, so I assume the same counts for smaller ones.
It may be that the 13" screens only have 20 pins, and larger have 30.

@RealBlackStuff,

Thanks again for the advise. I really hope it works, so I can save on having to shell out for a used R50e panel.

I guess I need to find time to open up the units and try the transplant. Will update the post when I get the chance.
