Need Help with WiFi Card Driver

#1 Post by DrGrafix » Fri Jul 23, 2010 7:37 am

Hey guys... as I mentioned some time back, I was giving my T30 to my son and I did. It was running sluggish to say the least so he reformatted it and it's running fine... actually great. Except for one thing... no wifi. A couple of years ago I bought a wireless G card from another member here and it replaced the original which had crapped out. The wireless G was working great until he reformatted obviously because it's expecting the OEM card and its been replaced. I don't know if he's comfortable opening up the shell, so before I write him and explain that... does anyone remember what those wireless G wifi cards used as a driver? And if not, then if get him to open it up, can we find a driver by looking at the card ID?

As always, thanks for the help.

A few months ago, I too got a wireless card from a forum member that was selling a few, but there is no way to tell for sure that it is the same card you have. Anyway, mine has an Atheros AR5BMB5 chip. But if you have your son open the cover, he can read the FCC ID number without removing the card from the PCI slot. He should be able to search for a driver using that number.

Another alternative would be to boot a live Linux CD. They are usually good at hardware detection, and will likely identify the wifi chip you have.

Another possibility is to google the hardware ID as displayed in device manager properties.

OK... I got a picture of the wifi card... here it is:

Hope this helps!!! I tried googling the FCC # and got to what might be the correct information page but when I look for drivers all I get is errors.

That's an Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG Mini-PCI Adapter. Here are the drivers -

Also, we don't allow inline pics without a warning in the subject line, so I broke the img tags above.

Harry... Sorry, I forgot about the pix but thanks for the ID/file. I downloaded it and saved the file in a "WiFi Driver" directory. Forgive me father LOL, but it has been years since I installed a PCI card!!! Is there a procedure FAQ for installing this card? The thinkpad was reformatted a few days ago with XP and while it obviously works with a ethernet cable. I'm getting too used to automated installs I guess... don't know how to tell this thinkpad that the wifi card is there and that the drivers are over... thereLOL!

BTW, is this an "Atheros" PCI card? And I should note that this card has worked like a charm since I installed it a few years ago, so I know that there was some sort of "trick" to installing it, but once done... it worked great until we reformatted.

Once you run the downloaded file, it will extract files into a sub-directory of C:\drivers. Go into that directory and run the exec to install the Intel driver. No this is not an Atheros card. It is an Intel 2200bg card.

Hey Harry... THANKS! Working just fine right now. For some strange reason I kept thinking this was some weird card and I needed to rig up a LINUS disk to manually install it. But yeah... worked exactly as you said. Thanks again. Now... I may even try to fix the dead memory bank with a little heat from my soldering gun. Maybe.
