ThinkPad to get next

#1 Post by wgg » Fri Jul 23, 2010 7:53 pm

I am not plannjing on getting one soon but I was wondering what you guys thought would be the next computer to add to my collection since I do a lot of programming.

Here are kinda my needs and what I wil use it for:
  • Programming
  • Web development
  • Internet browsing
  • Using it as a computer to use when repairing other peoples computers

If you have any other questions please ask as I understand I have been unclear in my post.

Cheers,

Cut the guy (kid?) some slack. He obviously doesn't have a lot of cash for a newer Thinkpad and wants to dream a bit. I would agree that there is not a lot of information given to answer the question properly. @ williamgeorgegardner, try to be a bit more specific as to what your needs are, what features you like best in a Thinkpad, and approximately when you'll be looking for a newer model.

I think goofyGAguy was more referring to the contradiction between "not planning on getting one soon" and "what to get?". The market changes so quickly these days, both for new and used models, that it it impossible to say now what is the best thing to get in some future time.

I know what he meant and was referring to, thanks. It does not hurt to be a bit more understanding in certain situations is all I am saying.

I think it depends a lot on how much you are willing to spend. Depending on that, you may have to settle for an older used model, or afford a brand new one with all the bells and whistles.

williamgeorgegardner, I am looking at your signature. You already have a T43, but it has minimal specs and is thus underperforming. So, perhaps upgrading to 2GB RAM and a faster HDD (i.e. either a 7200rpm drive or a large 5400rpm one) would speed it up enough to meet your requirements. Oh, what kind of anti-virus program are you using on this T43? Replacing it with a faster program might also help.
Microsoft Surface 3 (Atom x7-Z8700 / 4GB / 128GB / LTE)
Dell OptiPlex 9010 SFF (Core i3-3220 / 8GB / 8TB); HP 8300 Elite minitower (Core i7-3770 / 16GB / 9.25TB)
Acer T272HUL; Crossover 404K; Dell 3008WFP, U2715H, U2711, P2416D; Monoprice 10734; QNIX QHD2410R; Seiki Pro SM40UNP

I still want to upgrade my T43 for sure but I was wondering, if I do come across some money is the x40 a good buy?

That would depend on the price, wouldn't it?
