T61 Lenovo Power Mgr resets CPU level

#1 Post by dickybilly » Sat Jul 24, 2010 9:35 am

For unknown reasons the a/c power setting for CPU in Lenovo Power Manager v3.25 (latest) seems to randomly change itself from HIGHEST to LOW or ADAPTIVE to LOW. Also sometimes the WIFI device a/c setting changes randomly from maximum performance to maximum power saving. These randon changes occur to the power manager a/c settings only and happen only when the T61 is running on a/c power not battery.

The latest happened this morning coming out of sleep mode. Prior to sleep the a/c power mgr CPU was set and running HIGHEST, out of sleep it was LOW. The T61 was on a/c power the entire time with a 100% charged battery. After noticing I again returned the a/c CPU setting to HIGHEST, applied the setting. I did some browsing and other things with the clear indication that CPU was at running highest/very fast. I left Lenovo Power Manager along with IE8 and several other programs running in the background and I walked away for 45 minutes.

When I returned and looked at the power manager screen a/c CPU was reset to LOW and the T61 was running slowly. I wouldn't have expected this to dynamically happen because there were background programs running so the CPU wasn't at idle.

Am I forgetting/missing to set some other a/c Lenovo power manager or Vista Home Premium setting which senses no keyboard activity and would reset CPU to LOW as a power savings affectation?

I seem to always be resetting CPU back to HIGHEST manually because the T61/Levovo power manager/Vista Home Premium is resetting to LOW....

any thoughts ??? THANKS

Just wanted to check that it's a 90Watt adapter (it is). Your machine is acting like it's underpowered, as it would if it were running on a 65watt adapter.

thanks...
I just brought the T61 back from a 2hr sleep and CPU returned correctly to ADAPTIVE.
this issue is hard to pin down because it's so variable.

additional information:

I've now discovered some consistency with the automatic reset from HIGHEST or ADAPTIVE to LOW CPU ... when I leave the T61 running (with any programs) but walk away from it for at least 45 minutes when I return the CPU is ALWAYS reset to LOW.

I've now decided to go to the global power setting tab of Lenovo Power Manager and under advanced settings change power management for CPU AND PCI BUS to DISABLE from automatic. From my reading these settings should only take effect when on battery but perhaps they also take effect when on a/c ...

I'm testing now to see if the problem continues. So far after a 2hr period w/o touching the keyboard the T61 CPU did not revert from adaptive...a good sign
Further testing has shown the CPU flipped back to LOW after another 2hr idle period... so the randomness of the change still exists making this a difficult one to really solve.

Perhaps someone else has experience with these settings ???
