Problem with X60 fan
Problem with X60 fan
I am getting "fan error" as soon as I boot and it aborts. The fan starts for a short time and then it stops. I cleaned that area with high pressure air can, but it has made no difference. Any ideas?

Re: Problem with X60 fan
did you have any rattling noises when it worked? seems there were a few x60 fans that failed and they've been replacing them under warranty.

I did not hear any abnormal rattling sound. I can hear the fan speed up at boot time and then die.
thanks

If you are getting a fan error, your only choice is to replace the fan.

Re: Problem with X60 fan
Actually you have several options.
You can blow compressed air into the fan vent openings. If the fan is stuck this may free it.
Or you can partially disassemble the computer (keyboard and upper case) and blow compressed air into the fan vents and the fan itself. If the fan is stuck this may free it.
Or, if you think the fan is not stuck, when the Fan Error message appears you can hit the escape key and the computer should boot normally.
Then you need to decide whether the fan is working or not. You can listen for it. Or you can install the program tpfancontrol which will read and display the fan speed.
In my case, the fan is working just fine and I only occasionally get the Fan Error message.
