T40 audio ports on left side, no sounds

on a T40, using the two ports on left side for audio, microphone, one port(green) is marked with a half circle (audio input/output), the other(red) is microphone

I get no sound when plugging in a variety of late model headsets but if I move those two plugs into a USB adapter and insert the USB into one of the ports, I get audio and microphone just fine using same headset.

Is there something that is disabling the audio ports? Using the Thinkpad Control Panel applet, it shows audio is fully enabled

This is both on a Linux T40 and XP Pro T40, same result

No, this is the T4X0 forum...as in T400 and T410. Moved to T4X forum...
