T410 "Unexpected Shutdown" When Using Wireless Connection

#1 Post by nikki605 » Wed Jul 28, 2010 12:24 pm

OK guys, I need help with the T410 I just got last Thursday (config in my sig). This is my first Win 7 PC so be gentle as I am still learning my way around and never used a Vista PC.

Using System Update, I have previously installed all critical, recommended & optional updates from lenovo. I have also installed all MS high priority updates as well as 3 hotfixes - KB979278, KB976759 & KB981889. I have uninstalled Office 2010 which came preinstalled but not activated and installed Office 2007 because I already had a license for it.

My problem is system crashes when connected wirelessly to my router. If I cable into one of the router ports, it doesn't crash. In the Toolbox Performance and Configuration History section, I find these entries: "The previous system shutdown at {time & date} was unexpected."

While connected wirelessly, today alone, it crashed at 8:09AM, 8:22AM, 8:51AM, 9:23AM, 11:34AM & 12:07PM. After the last crash, I cabled it to my router and it is still running to this point. The wireless radio switch on the right side near the front is still switched "ON." Yesterday, I ran all day and night cabled to the router and had zero shutdowns.

When it crashes, I am not even using it. No applications open, just whatever gets loaded at startup.

Any ideas what to check?

Uninstall the wireless card through the device manager, reboot, install the latest drivers from Intel's website and reboot.

Let me know if that helps the situation at all.

I downloaded and installed the "driver only" (ver 13.2.1.5). I'll reboot and switch to wireless and see what happens. I wasn't smart enough to look at what version was previously installed before I uninstalled it.

Testing... testing...

Well, that didn't work out. Now, Access Connections sees no wireless networks at all to connect to. Also, the Network and Sharing Center says there are no connections.

EDIT: The name of the file I downloaded & installed from Intel is ICS_Ds64.exe. Is that the right one? I got no errors when it ran.

Edit 2: Interesting - Fn-F5 shows the wireless radio "off" and clicking on the "Power On" button does nothing. The adapter's properties in Device Manager says the device is "working properly." Uh - no it isn't :?

EDIT 3: I'm not sure how, but I was finally able to turn "on" the wireless radio from the Fn-F5 screen. I am back connected wirelessly to my home network. So now I will let it sit like before and see what happens. The time is 4:56PM EDT for comparison to any error entries in the log.

EDIT 4: Performance and Configuration History is cool! It tells me that I updated the wireless driver and the previous version was 13.2.0.30 dated 3-18-2010. So it was old.

Turns out it was a conflict with ZoneAlarm. :( I had to completely uninstall it. For the rest of today, no shutdowns. For the time being, I turned Windows Defender back on as well as the Windows Firewall until I find a better a/v - a/s solution that will work on the T410 with Win 7 x64. :?
